Fox Sports Detroit:
DETROIT -- Just when it appears youre on the road to recovery, you suffer yet another setback, which further delays your return to the ice.
Welcome to the life of Red Wings forward Darren Helm.
Helm left the ice early on Friday because something didnt feel right, and on Saturday he found out he strained his groin and is listed as day-to-day.
It is almost kind of comical the way these things keep happening, said an optimistic Helm. I came off (on Friday), wasnt too happy, but it wasnt my back.
So, Im not too upset about it. I dont think its going to keep me off the ice too long.
Helm has been battling an undiagnosed back aliment for several months, which limited him to just one game last season. Throughout this offseason, he's been diligent in his rehab process, with his sights set on being cleared to participate in training camp, which starts Thursday in Traverse City.
That could be an iffy proposition now.
The plan is to see how I feel Thursday, Helm said. This is not the way I wanted to start camp. I worked pretty hard to be able to get back and be able to participate and now this.
If its not the back, its another thing. So, its just get healthy and see what I can do.
As it stands now, Helm is not cleared to be on the ice. When he receives clearance is anybodys guess.
Cleary: A decision is coming soon
Daniel Cleary was back with his former teammates on Monday and told reporters that he will make a decision about his future soon.
Im talking to two teams," he said. Its not an easy decision to make. I have to come up with something today (Monday) and figure out what Im going to do."
Cleary has maintained that he will not go to Traverse City on a professional tryout contract, that he doesnt regret turning down the Wings' offer over the summer, that he wants to remain in Detroit and will talk to Wings GM Ken Holland before he makes his decision.
I talked to Kenny last night," Cleary said. "I talked to Babs (coach Mike Babcock). I think everybody knows the situation and I do, too. I know it very well, actually.
We all want the same thing. Its just going to be very hard to do. Theres nothing like being a Red Wing.
Tootoo: Approach to camp never changes
Jordan Tootoo plays the game on the fringe -- and hes always on the fringe of making the team each season.
Every year is like a tryout camp for me," he said. "Thats how I take it mentally. I just have to prepare every day to be the best that I can because theres a hundred other guys that want to be in your spot.
Im coming into camp with the mindset of fighting for a spot on the team, and thats the bottom line.
Tootoo is well aware of the Wings' roster and cap woes, and that he has been mentioned in trade rumors.
Ive been through a lot of (bleep) over the years," he said. "This is what makes you a stronger person, both on and off the ice. Its about mentally being strong, and having the will and courage to overcome hard times.
Thats why we have the guys in the dressing room. Were all family. We pick each other up when someones down, and thats what great about this game.
Although he constantly draws praise from Babcock, its oblivious that the Wings are willing to move Tootoo.

The Detroit Red Wings have been one, if not the best, NHL team for the past 20 years. But will that continue with the Wings moving east and some of its main core of players 30 and above in age? I would say yes for a couple of reasons, in my opinion the move to the eastern conference will help the Wings Tremendously. In a lockout shortened season the Wings finished with 56 points...
from Ansar Khan of Mlive,
The Red Wings have 25 NHL players, two over the roster limit. That includes 16 forwards, two more than they intend to carry. They are $637,000 over the salary cap.
Here is a look at some of their options:

After missing virtually the entire season due to back pain, Helm has made progress...
Recently I described the Detroit Red Wings greatest weaknesses they will need to overcome this season. So it’s only fair to look at the other end of the spectrum and analyze their strengths as well.

A lot of head scratching going on over the Flyers and Dan Cleary reaching an agreement on a contract which will pay Cleary $8.25M over 3 years plus a No-Trade Clause.
The Malik Report has reaction to the signing and hockey fans voice their opinion at HFBoards.
My reaction? Cleary has been a warrior for the Red Wings but injuries over the last few years were an issue for him...

The Red Wings will depart for Traverse City this morning--with half of the NHL roster taking part in a community outreach tour throughout the State of Michigan, and the rest either busing or flying up--and the team will take its physicals (and deal with their "mugshots") and participate in a charity golf tournament on Wednesday, with the main camp opening up on Thursday...
Mike Modano played 22 seasons in the NHL, 21 of them with the Stars in Minnesota and Dallas and one with the Red Wings. Over Labor Day weekend, Modano married professional golfer Allison Micheletti, daughter of former NHLer and current hockey analyst Joe Micheletti. The same year that Modano played his first game in the NHL, 1989, Allison was born. She’s 24 years old. Modano...

The differences between the Red Wings prospects' 4-1 win over the St. Louis Blues' prospects and a game between the teams' NHL rosters involved the names on the backs of the jerseys and the venue.

The Red Wings prospects' big win over St. Louis last night earned the team the opportunity to compete for its first prospect tournament title when they battle the Buffalo Sabres' prospects this evening (the game takes place at Centre Ice Arena at 7:30 PM), and Grand Rapids Griffins coach Jeff Blashill was blunt about the significance of his team's potential performance...

@SportsnetSpec Stars seem to have enough veteran forwards with Whitney, Horcoff, Cole, Peverley, Fiddler. Kids need chance to play.
