Henrik Lundqvist has become one of the game's premier goalies and is the veritable face of the New York Rangers. The 2012 Vezina Trophy winner has just one year left on his deal with the club and some talks have already taken place regarding an extension. While in his native Sweden for the national team's Olympic orientation camp he spoke with Swedish TV network SVT2 about his future with the Rangers and the possibility of a maximum extension. ... It may be hard to picture but Lundqvist could command a gigantic salary and max term as part of his extension. It is likely that's exactly what he would get as an unrestricted free agent. With the market as it is and Lundqvist's status as one of if not the best goaltender in the league he could conceivably get eight years at around $8.5 million to $9.5 million per year as Larry Brooks noted weeks ago in the New York Post (via Sporting News). That's a lot of coin. However it doesn't seem Lundqvist is in any rush...

Getting the most out of Brad Richards

Like it or not, they need him. It’s no secret. I was very vocal about using our last compliance buyout on Brad Richards this summer. Rather than run the risk of injury and getting stuck with his cap hit —for what will seem like perpetuity if he does get injured— the Rangers decided to give him one last shot at glory. While I’m disappointed in the decision, I assure you I...

Dangers of handing roster spots to kids

Kreider is likely the only rookie to break camp this season. As we get deeper into the dog days of August, we see really bad trade rumors and people like me killing time with a theoretical expansion draft. However, with only Derek Stepan left to be signed, many have started penciling in their starting lineup for puck drop in October, something I’m guilty of as well. It ranges from...

Prospect Progress Report: Calle Andersson

Calle Andersson, a 19-year-old defenseman from Sweden, was ranked 15th overall among European skaters in the final Central Scouting Rankings entering the 2012 draft. He ended up being drafted in the 4th round (119th overall) by the New York Rangers. Andersson currently plays for Malmo in HockeyAllsvenskan (the second highest league in Sweden).   The […]

Never-ending Staal to Carolina talk continues to make no sense

Marc has never said a word about joining his brothers in Carolina Ever since Jordan Staal turned down a 10-year, $60 million contract extension from Pittsburgh last June, leading to a blockbuster draft day trade to the Hurricanes, Rangers fans have been panicked about Marc Staal’s desire to join his three brothers in Carolina. Marc himself has never given us any reason to believe...

Three Join Vigneault's Staff in New York

Three men with a wealth of experience as well as distinct ties to the Rangers will be joining Alain Vigneault's coaching staff for the 2013-14 season in New York. Former NHL head coach Scott Arniel has been hired by the Rangers to serve as Vigneault's associate coach while former NHL players Ulf Samuelsson and Daniel Lacroix will be assistant coaches. Arniel coached the...

John Tortorella Is A Ticking Time Bomb In Vancouver

(Photo by Rich Lam/Getty Images) By Sean Hartnett (@HartnettHockey)  John Tortorella is in the infancy of tenure as head coach of the Vancouver Canucks. So far, he’s done an excellent job at putting up a facade and played nice with British Columbia media. Eventually, this temporary exterior is going to crack. Sure, Tortorella can smile all the way through training camp and pretend...

At financial crossroads, how will Rangers cope?

Money or success? We knew this time was coming. Rangers’ fans knew that as the team’s window of contention began to open so would the period come where multiple essential Rangers would approach contract negotiation time. It leaves the Rangers in a sort of crossroads over the next twelve months. With Derek Stepan still unsigned, Henrik Lundqvist, Dan Girardi and Ryan Callahan...
