Including the postseason, the Washington Capitals have now played 2,873 games, and in only four of them have they held an opponent shotless for an entire period. Interestingly, two of those games have come against Florida (last night and on February 15, 2003).
If you do the math, you appreciate how extraordinary an accomplishment last night's third period was. Multiply nearly 2,900 games by three periods of play, and you come up with more than 8,600 20-minute stanzas -- not including full periods played in playoff overtime over the years -- and all but four of them recorded shots against.
