Former Los Angeles Kings' goaltender Jonathan Bernier is getting a shot at becoming the starter for the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Laval, Quebec native is a capable starter for any team in the league. Bernier has a good track record at every level he's played, from the QMJHL to being a Stanley Cup winner as a backup. Below is a scouting report from The Hockey News. Assets: His reflexes are first-rate and cat-like. Plays with supreme confidence when tending goal. Can steal a game all on his own, and is also capable of shaking off bad goals. Flaws: Needs to play with more focus, so as to diminish the number of bad goals allowed. Can get into slumps where he starts fighting the puck. Lacks consistency, overall. Career Potential: Talented goaltender with good upside. A weakness in Bernier's game is play along the post. These are where the players are going to shoot from most of the time since they are pushed to the outside. If a good shooter can find a hole, he will score, and that is where Bernier has been victimized throughout his career.  Bernier is one of the most competitive goaltenders in the league. He hasn't been handed anything to him in his career, so his hard-work translates on the ice. However, his competitiveness can get the best of him at times when he does get noticeable frustrated after allowing a goal.     Jonathan Bernier's 2013-14 stats Name W L OT SO SV% GAA #45 Jonathan Bernier 2 1 0 0 .963 1.18 Jonathan Bernier's career vs Nashville Name W L OT SO SV% GAA #45 Jonathan Bernier 7 1 0 1 .932 1.88 (Photo by: Nathan Denette/Canadian Press)

Leafs to start goalie Jonathan Bernier against Colorado Avalanche

Jonathan Bernier will start in goal Tuesday night when the Maple Leafs face the Colorado Avalanche and put their undefeated 3-0 record on the line. The Leafs — whose sterling record is tainted by an NHL-leading 50 turnovers so far — will be making a game-time decision on centre Jay McLement who was with his wife who went into labour. McLement one of the club’s most reliable...

Bernier earns first shutout as Maple Leaf, blanks Predators 4-0

Jonathan Bernier sat calm and cool much like he had stood in his crease for each of the 36 shots he had faced from a Predators team that really shouldn’t be able to get that many. He had just completed his first shutout as a Maple Leaf and seventh in a career that has had just 65 NHL starts. So sitting in the visitors’ dressing room at the Bridgestone Arena could he imagine...

Jonathan Bernier; The Toronto Maple Leafs Number One Goalie

By Tony Ambrogio (@SNTonyAmbrogio) Getty Images Jonathan Bernier is the Toronto Maple Leafs number one goalie; just don’t ask Coach Randy Carlyle about it. On Saturday, the Leafs goalie is expected to start for a third straight time, when the Leafs host the Edmonton Oilers.  If he does get the start, it would be the first time Bernier has done that in his career. “I trained...

Bernier continues to have the Preds’ number

The Nashville Predators hosted the Toronto Maple Leafs for just the fifth time in their history on Thursday. They also hosted goaltender Jonathan Bernier for the fourth time and, for the fourth time, he beat them. In front of 16,671 at Bridgestone Arena, the Leafs came away with a 4-0 victory. The score doesn’t suggest it but Pekka Rinne was outstanding. He collected 22 saves,...

The Hangover: Bernier stymies Preds yet again

The Toronto Maple Leafs were able to pull of a 4-0 victory over the Nashville Predators on the road thanks to goaltender Jonathan Bernier, who recorded his first shutout of the year stopping all thirty-six shots that he faced. With the win tonight, Bernier goes 8-1-0 in his career against Nashville. "I guess I feel pretty good playing against that team." 13:18 into...

Oilers-Maple Leafs Preview

Strong goaltending has played a key role in the Toronto Maple Leafs' fast start. The same can't be said about the Edmonton Oilers' situation between the pipes. The surging Maple Leafs try to get off to their best start in 20 years Saturday night when they host an Edmonton team looking to avoid its worst five-game start since 1995-96. Toronto (4-1-0) continued its solid...

The Good, The Bad, and the Predators Become Prey by   Bradshaw Furlong

It was another typical Toronto Maple Leafs win as they looked dead in the water for a large part of the second period after not recording a shot for over 14 minutes in the first period, but they found a way to score and give their team life as Jonathan Bernier kept the team in it the whole way [...]
