(Photo by: Matt Kartozian/USA Today Sports) Chad Johnson is trying to inch his way into the National Hockey League every chance he gets. His opportunity right now to start a game in the NHL is due to the loss of star goaltender Mike Smith. This will be Johnson's second stint in Glendale this season. When Johnson isn't in the NHL, he is normally in the American Hockey League playing for the Coyotes' minor league affiliate Portland Pirates. There he has started in 32 games with a record of 16-13-1. Before coming to the Coyotes' organization, Johnson was with the New York Rangers, spending most of his time with the AHL's Conneticuit Whale. But, he was drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2006 during the 5th round. In 2008-09 season with the University of Alaska-Fairbanks, Johnson was awarded CCHA player of the year and was first team all-star. Johnson doesn't have too much upside as he will be a capable backup goaltender at best someday. On the plus side, at 6'3", he can take up a good portion of the net and can play bigger than his size at times. The Calgary native gives up a lot of rebounds in dangerous areas instead of kicking them out to the corners or walls. Players will be lurking like sharks trying to find loose pucks. However, Johnson has quick movement to recover when in the butterfly.
