The Nashville Predators recorded their fifth win in six games Saturday night in the second of back-to-back games. They were able to play spoiler and defeat the San Jose Sharks at SAP Center 3-0 to keep their playoff hopes alive for another day. Predators goaltender Carter Hutton stood on his head against San Jose, making 35 saves, earning his first career NHL shutout. Hutton will have to kiss his posts later after the Sharks hit them at least three times the entire night. Hutton’s record now improves to 19-11-4. Patric Hornqvist notched his third consecutive multi-point night with two goals in the second period at 3:48 and 8:59 and an assist on Roman Josi’s goal at 13:16 of the second period. Both goals allowed him to reach the 20-goal mark for the third time in his career. Hornqvist has 7 goals, 8 assist in his last 7 games. San Jose applied pressure in the third period, putting on 19 shots to Nashville’s 7, but Hutton turned them all away. Playoffs are not impossible, but are highly unlikely. But, let’s stay optimistic for just a moment. I haven’t done the math, but I believe if Dallas and Phoenix were to win just one game for the remainder of the season while Nashville won out, the Preds would be playoff bound. The next opponent is Tuesday night in Dallas. That game will determine their fate.
