Well THIS is quite a way to start a season! Despite the fact that Islanders star John Tavares had a pretty quiet night, the Islanders pulled out a 4-3 shootout win over the Devils in their season opener last night. Lineman Matt Moulson scored the only goal of the shootout in the sixth round, Evgeni Nabokov looked strong in the net with 26 saves and Michael Grabner had two goals and an assist. “We had some mistakes, but we had some really good stuff in there. It’s the first game and we got the win. Now we have to go back to work tomorrow.” Michael Grabner said after his two goal performance in the opener.   Brunner tied the game at 3 with 7:34 left in the third period with his second goal of the game. This was just after a Devils power play expired. Defenseman Anton Volchenkov came off the bench and shot the puck toward the net. It deflected to Brunner and he slid it in for an easy goal. This is the first of five times the Islanders and Devils, metropolitan division foes, play each other this season. Last year, the Islanders won the season series 3-2. Surprisingly, this is the first time the Islanders have won a season opener since 2007 according to ESPN New York. That shows how rough the team has had it in the last few years, but could this year be different? Make sure to follow us on twitter and like us on facebook for your latest in New York sports news! Islanders must prove worth over 82 games

The fact of the matter is that for the Islanders to achieve definitive progress they will need to do something the franchise hasn’t done in more than two decades. With their season opening Friday night in Newark against a Devils team that played Thursday night in Pittsburgh the Islanders will begin to try to back up last season’s revitalizing run to the playoffs. It was on May...

Moulson gives Islanders win

Matt Moulson scored the only goal of the shootout in the sixth round and the New York Islanders opened the season with a 4-3 victory over the New Jersey Devils on Friday night. Evgeni Nabokov made 26 saves and stopped all six Devils shots in the shootout as the Islanders won a season opener for the first time since 2007. Michael Grabner scored two goals and set up another by Frans...

NHL Center Ice Watch, Vol. 1: Meet The Owner of the NHL’s Best Nickname

The New York Islanders open their season tonight in Newark tonight, taking on the Marty Brodeur Farewell Tour. The Islanders are expected to compete in the ultra-competitive Metropolitan Division this year. These expectations may seem a bit much for a team that has spent the better part of the last 20 years as the joke of the NHL. The obvious reason the Isles should be on your ...

Forward Progress

Ryan Pulock (Brandon Wheat Kings) Friday offered up 6 games involving New York Islander and New York Ranger prospects with a mixed bag of results to show for the night. One thing did stand out and that was the play of Ryan Pulock (NYI 2013 1st) as for the second straight game, Pulock was an impact player. Gordie Clark the New York Ranger's Director of Player Personnel taught...

Dee Karl: Quiet Quotes from the room after a 3-2 Loss

"We're not satisfied, but it's a step in the right direction." Matt Moulson sat quietly hardly looking up at the reporters around him with thier iPhones up close trying to catch every word the soft spoken Moulson was saying. The Islanders had the lead. They could have had two points. Somehow, the tide turned and the Columbus Blue Jackets pushed the game to...

Blue Jackets rally for SO win over Islanders

Cam Atkinson scored in the fourth round of a shootout, and the Columbus Blue Jackets rallied from two goals down in the third period to spoil the New York Islanders' home opener with a 3-2 victory on Saturday night. The Islanders and goalie Evgeni Nabokov seemed to be in complete control before Mark Letestu and Nick Foligno scored 4:19 apart to get even at 2-2 after the Blue...

Blue Jackets rally past Islanders

One night after Columbus had its home opener spoiled, the Blue Jackets wrecked the New York Islanders' first night in front of their fans. The Islanders came in with momentum Saturday after opening their season one night earlier with a shootout win at New Jersey. With a two-goal lead in the third period, New York seemed poised for a 2-0 start as the club seeks to return to...

Islanders top Devils in shootout to cap sloppy game

No it was not the prettiest but in the end it’s not as if the Islanders care. On Friday night at the Prudential Center in Newark the Islanders managed to open their season with a 4-3 shootout win over the Devils in a game that was not very convincing in proving that the preseason was over. “It was a little bit more wide-open than I anticipated” said coach Jack Capuano insistent...

Islanders-Devils Preview

After ending a five-year playoff drought, the New York Islanders enter 2013-14 under the spotlight. Kicking things off on a positive note, though, could prove difficult against future Hall of Famer Martin Brodeur, who tries to help the New Jersey Devils bounce back in his season debut. Hoping to avoid a sixth consecutive season-opening loss, the Islanders try to spoil the Devils...

Dee Karl: Isles 4-3 Win "All Sorts Of Awful"

Game one seemed terribly familiar as an Islanders fan. Both teams came out of the gate at record speed, excited to get the game started. But the first period was only a little more than two minutes old when Brunner scored on Nabokov to give the Devils a lead. It was only the third shot he had faced. He shook it off. He ended up making 25 saves on 28 shots during regulation. ...
