After all the hulabaloo that was trade deadline day on Monday, the Columbus Blue Jackets held a press conference with General Manager Scott Howson and Senior Advisor Craig Patrick. Patrick was relatively quiet, and few asked him questions, but his presence was undeniable. When asked his role in the trade process, he referred to himself as the, voice of reason. Make no mistake, Patricks voice is heard and appreciated when it comes to the players and what happens next for the last place club that lost its way. Asked what it will take to turn this 19-38-7 ship around, Patrick was clear: Defense, forwards and goaltending. New goaltenders? Not exactly. I still think (Steve Mason) has that level of game in him, said Patrick, referring to Masons Calder Trophy winning ways from 2008-09. We just have to figure out how to get it out of him. Perhaps they are closer than they think after Mason earned his first shut-out of the season Thursday night against the Colorado Avalanche, making 32 saves in the 2-0 victory. Mason has been working on his game with goaltending coach Ian Clark on just about everything, he told Fox Sports Ohio two weeks ago. From "technique to positioning to the mental aspect," he said. In Thursdays win, he took to work on keeping tighter to the net in a rush situation. Mason has an opportunity to get his first back-to-back shut-out since Feb. 6 and 10, 2010, tonight when he gets the start against Phoenix. You can catch the 8 p.m. game on Fox Sports Ohio.
