Standout defenseman Jacob Trouba will forego his final three years of eligibility with the University of Michigan and sign with the Winnipeg Jets. The Jets announced Trouba’s decision on Tuesday night; Trouba later confirmed the news on Twitter. I’m proud to be signing with the @nhljets. Looking forward to starting my career with a great organization. #gojetsgo — Jacob Trouba (@JacobTrouba) April 3, 2013 The move is another blow for a Wolverines team reeling from missing the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 23 years and subsequently losing another defenseman, Jon Merrill, who skipped his senior season to join the New Jersey Devils. Michigan will return five defensemen next season: Mac Bennett, Mike Chiasson, Kevin Clare, Brennan Serville and Mike Szuma and Brennan Serville. Winnipeg made Trouba the ninth overall pick in last year’s draft. Trouba proceeded to put up 29 points (12 G, 17 A) as one of the Wolverines’ top players all season. He especially stepped up down the stretch, after Merrill returned to the lineup, but his rocket shot from the point and awareness in both zones made Trouba an impressive presence on Michigan’s blue line. The Jets entered Tuesday in first place in the Southest Division, though with just 38 points — 18 behind the Eastern Conference-leading Penguins.
