The Columbus Blue Jackets have shipped forward Jeff Carter to the Los Angeles Kings for defenseman Jack Johnson and a first-round draft pick (either in 2012 or 2013).

"Jeff is a proven goal scorer in our league," Kings GM Dean Lombardi said. "He brings goal-scoring abilities, speed, and at his age, he is entering the prime of his career. We also like his versatility as he can play both center and wing."

For whatever reason it did not work out in Columbus for Jeff Carter. That does not mean Carter is not an extremely talented star in the NHL. Hopefully his injuries are behind him... The Los Angeles Kings are a team desperate for his scoring touch. The Kings currently sit dead last in goals per game averaging 2.05 - one of the lowest totals in recent years -.

However, they are still in a battle for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference. So Jeff Carter should be extremely happy. The Los Angeles Kings were my Stanley Cup pick to represent the Western Conference at the beginning of the season. This move should get them into the playoffs.

The move also reunites the 27-year-old with former Philadelphia Flyers teammate -- and buddy -- Mike Richards. Fantasy owners should see an immediate spike in Jeff Carter's production. I will even go as far as to say, it will be the return of the old Jeff Carter.

This acquisition is being classified as a ' smart hockey trade' for both franchises.

Jack Johnson is a talented mobile defenseman capable of producing offense. Formally, the third overall pick, by the Carolina Hurricanes in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft Johnson has the pedigree of a franchise defenseman something the Columbus Blue Jackets have always been looking for. I'm excited by this," Johnson told Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch.

"I'm excited to go to a team that wants me, and to play in a great sports city.

"I want to be part of the solution there. I know they've had some bad breaks and some tough seasons, but it's going to be great when it turns around. Really, I don't think there's anything sweeter in sports than being part of a team when they get it turned around."

One blockbuster trade is out of the way. I wonder how many more we will see before the Monday trade deadline at 3 PM Eastern...

JC Superstar Born Again in the City of Angels

So why does it feel like I just used Jeff Carter as the headline in one of my posts?  Oh, because I did.  In fact here is a snippet of what I said just 2 days ago:  “Despite that enormous contract, other teams will trade for him too (I am of the opinion that Carter, not Nash will be the one headed out of Colombus).  And if you own Carter that is good news.   Literally anywhere...

Ice Breaker?

The Kings addressed their league-worst offense by acquiring Jeff Carter from the Blue Jackets. Stu Hackel says the deal may kick start a flurry of action before Monday's deadline.

Tha Carter

So let me see if I'm doing my math correctly here... + = So Dean Lombardi is able to bring in a player with nearly 200 goals in his first 500 games for an expendable defenseman and a #1 pick in either the 2012 or 2013 draft? And this player is best friends with Mike Richards? And he didn't have to trade his backup goalie? Why that's enough to make anyone associated...
