The National Hockey League announced earlier today that Washington Capitals defenseman John Erskine has been suspended three games for an elbow to the head of Philadelphia Flyers' forward Wayne Simmonds during last night's 3-2 Caps win.
Erskine had raised his elbow during a 50-50 battle for the puck, striking Simmonds in the side of the head. Flyers General Manager Mike Holmgren confirmed on Saturday that Simmonds had suffered a concussion on the play.
Erskine was in the midst of a very good start to the season, having recorded two points and looking like one of the better Caps defenseman through his five games. The Caps will likely call one of Roman Hamrlik or Tom Poti during Erskine's absence.
