Ed Jovanovski has played in 979 games in the National Hockey League since becoming the first overall draft pick of the Florida Panthers in 1994.
He’s scored 128 goals in his NHL career before Wednesday night. Not bad for a defenseman.
But Jovanovski cranked it up a bit higher at Jobing.com Arena last night. His third goal of the game came on the power play and broke a 3-3 tie with 14:22 to go, giving the Phoenix Coyotes a 4-3 over the Nashville Predators.
That’s right, it was his third goal of the game. It was Jovanovski’s first career hat trick, and the first ever by a defenseman in franchise history.
It was the 2nd hat trick for the Coyotes this season. Lee Stempniak scored three goals back on October 21st in a 4-2 over the L.A. Kings. The Coyotes, who are tied for 24th in goals scored this season are the only team to have two different players score a hat trick so far this year.
