Kings-Hurricanes Preview

Associated Press  |  Last updated October 11, 2013
The Los Angeles Kings are counting on a big win to propel them going forward. Nathan Gerbe and the Carolina Hurricanes are coming off an impressive result of their own. The Kings kick off a four-game road trip Friday night against Gerbe and the Hurricanes. Los Angeles (2-2-0) followed back-to-back losses with Wednesday's 4-3 overtime win over Ottawa, getting two goals apiece from captain Dustin Brown and Jeff Carter. While the Kings let up following a three-goal first period, Brown was pleased with the way they responded. "We just wanted to establish that mentality we had last year," said Brown, whose team went 2 for 6 on the man advantage. "Obviously, it wasn't as clean as we wanted it, but we got the job done. That's what we need from our power play, to step up at big times. The important thing is to continue to build on that." Carter's game-winning goal came 28 seconds into overtime on a deflection of Mike Richards' shot. Anze Kopitar and Richards both notched two assists. "He made a great play," Carter said of Richards. "All I did was go to the net and stand there. You go to the net, put your stick on the ice, and guys in this league are going to find it. It's pretty simple. I don't do anything pretty out there." The Hurricanes (2-1-1) also carry some momentum into this contest after a 3-2 win at Washington on Thursday. Rookie Elias Lindholm and Alexander Semin erased a pair of one-goal deficits and Gerbe scored the go-ahead tally 6:59 into the third period, his third in four games. "He's doing a lot of things well without the puck," coach Kirk Muller said of Gerbe, who was signed to a one-year deal this summer. "He's competes and he works and he's really worked for his goals so far. It was a huge one." Gerbe is quick to credit teammates Jordan Staal and Patrick Dwyer for his early-season success. "They're two great players," said Gerbe, who scored 11 goals in 104 games over the previous two seasons while with Buffalo. "Obviously, playing with them makes the game simpler. We've been able to create some chemistry, beginning in training camp." Sitting behind Cam Ward on the depth chart, Anton Khudobin made 30 saves against the Capitals, improving to 2-0-0 with a 1.50 goals-against average. Ward, meanwhile, is 0-1-1 with a 3.90 GAA. Ward is 2-0-1 with a 1.97 GAA in three career starts against the Kings. Khudobin has never faced Los Angeles. Kings goalie Jonathan Quick has surrendered a combined 12 goals while starting each of the first four games. If that trend continues, Friday will mark his first appearance versus Carolina. Carter has totaled 10 goals and nine assists in his last 13 games against the Hurricanes, though he hasn't faced them since 2011 while with Philadelphia. The right winger has a team-leading four goals and five points this season. The Kings are 2-13-2 in their last 17 road games dating to last season, including playoffs. They are 1-2-2 with one tie in Carolina since 2001. Hurricanes forward Brett Sutter, still seeking his first point, is the son of Kings coach Darryl Sutter.
