The Los Angeles Kings will give backup goalie Jonathan Bernier the start in Tuesday's game against the New Jersey Devils despite the hot play of Jonathan Quick.
Kings coach Terry Murray announced that he has been planning since Saturday on resting Quick in advance of an upcoming three-game road trip.
Quick will watch from the sidelines despite a franchise-record, three-game shutout streak. Named the NHL’s first star of the week on Monday, Quick hasn't allowed a goal in 188 minutes, 10 seconds - also a franchise mark.
"We've got a lot of games coming up right now," Murray said. "The schedule starts to get busy and we've got three conference games right after New Jersey. It's an opportunity out of the early part of training camp here to get (Bernier) going."
Bernier has made one start this season, a 4-2 loss to Buffalo in Berlin - the Kings' only regulation defeat to date.
Quick is 5-0-1 with a 0.81 goals-against average and .972 save percentage.
