NASHVILLE -- The Nashville Predators reunited a pair of Belarussian brothers on the NHLs trade deadline, completing a second deal within 10 days with the Montreal Canadiens by acquiring left wing Andrei Kostitsyn.
The Predators sent their second-round pick in 2013 and a fifth-round conditional pick they had received from the Canadiens on Feb. 17 in exchange for defenseman Hal Gill. The Predators have been aggressive in trading draft picks over the last two seasons. They traded a first-rounder to Ottawa for center Mike Fisher last season and have traded two second-round picks this season (2012 and 13) to Montreal.
Last season, Sergei Kostitsyn, in his first season with Nashville after coming over from Montreal, was the Predators leading-scorer with 23 goals. Andrei, who is two years older at 27, was a higher pick in his draft year, going 10th overall to the Canadiens in 2003 in the NHL Entry Draft held in Nashville (Sergei was taken 200th overall in 2005). Andrei Kostitsyn is a three-time 20-goal scorer who is on a one-year deal worth 3.25 million. He will be an unrestricted free agent at seasons end.
While both players are listed as left wings, Andrei can play both sides and has played a lot of right wing in recent seasons, so look for coach Barry Trotz to pair them together on a line whenever it is that Andrei can play his first game with Nashville. The Predators go on the road on Tuesday to play at Carolina and their statement in announcing the deal indicated he would meet the team there on Tuesday.
Nashville general manager David Poile had talked about adding a top-six winger for his team, which entered the day fifth in the NHL in points, as it prepares to make a playoff push and now he has done so with the addition of Andrei Kostitsyn. He adds to the Preds scoring depth, as they now have six forwards who have scored at least 20 goals in a season at one point during their careers.
