Defenseman Kris Letang took himself off the market on July 2 when he re-signed with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Letang inked his name to an eight-year deal worth $58 million. Letang was considered by many to be the best defenseman in the NHL this season as he tied for the scoring lead among all blue liners with 38 points in just 35 games played. He was one of the three finalists for the Norris Trophy as the league’s top defenseman, but lost out to P.K. Subban of the Montreal Canadiens, who also scored 38 points. Letang still had one season remaining on his current contract which will take up $3.5 million worth of salary cap space for the Penguins next season. The new contract will kick in with the 2014/15 NHL campaign and the salary cap amount will rise to $7.25 million per season for him. Letang was eligible to test the free agency market after next season as an unrestricted free agent. The 26-year-old Letang has played 385 career regular season games in the NHL and has scored 44 goals along
