Beantown Banter OLD:
After losing the first two games of the series at home to Montreal, the Bruins would need two wins in one of the toughest venues in all of sports in order to reclaim their home ice advantage, and get themselves back into the series. If there is any sport where overcoming playoff deficits is possible, it's hockey. Just ask the Bruins. Regardless, a win tonight in Montreal would fix things for now, until the Black & Gold could get back to Boston for game 5.Montreal got the scoring started early when Brent Sopel's slap shot found twine to put Montreal up 1-0, and the Habs would take that lead to the room with them after 20.
Boston answered when ex-Canadien Michael Ryder sniped the top of the net on a break away to make the score 1-1.
Michael Cammileri and Andrei Kostitsyn each scored within 55 seconds of eachother to put the pressure on the Bruins, making the score 3-1, which would be the same deficit Boston would be facing at the end of the night if they didn't make some adjustments.
And adjust they did. Andrew Ferrence took a big hit in the defensive zone to move the puck up ice, then jumped into the play and fired a slap shot past Carey Price to bring Boston within one, 3-2. Eight minutes later, Brad Marchand tucked the puck behind Price and Bergeron tapped it home to tie the game at three with two minutes remaining in the second frame.
At the beginning of the third, Patrice Bergeron was sent to the box for hooking, putting the dangerous Montreal power play on the ice for the first time in the game. Calder Trophy candidate P.K. Suban sniped the top left corner to give Montreal a 4-3 lead early in the third.
With six minutes remaining, Chris Kelly, sporting a full face mask due to the facial injury that he suffered in game three, shoveled a losse puck through the legs of Price to tie the game at four. After six minutes of up and down play, including a huge penalty kill by the Bruins inside the last three minutes, the game would go to overtime.
Less than two minutes into the extra period, Ryder scored his second of the night to end the game and send the series back to Boston tied at two games apiece.
After losing home ice, the Bruins have regained the advantage, and in all likelihood, the momentum in this best of seven series. This team has shown more heart and determination over the last two games than last year's squad did all season. They've proven that it takes more than hockey skill to win a playoff game. I couldn't be more proud of this team, but there is still work to be done. Game five will be at the Garden on Saturday night.
