WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Washington Capitals blew a four-goal lead Saturday night before Mike Green scored a power-play goal at 2:59 of overtime, extending the team's winning streak to seven games with a 6-5 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning. Alex Ovechkin scored his 27th goal to move ahead in the NHL's goal-scoring race, and the Capitals moved four points clear atop the Southeast Division, albeit after cruising way too much once they had a 5-1 lead early in the second period. Green scored after Vincent Lecavalier was whistled for slashing Marcus Johansson, who was skating in on the crease for a clear look at a potential winning goal. Ovechkin broke a tie with the Lightning's Steven Stamkos to take the solo spot atop the goal leaderboard for the first time this season. Troy Brouwer, Jack Hillen, Jason Chimera and Eric Fehr also scored, and Braden Holtby made 35 saves for the Capitals. The win essentially served as the Capitals' game in hand against the second-place...

John Carlson’s stellar defensive play stops goal at last second

During the Washington Capitals-Carolina Hurricanes game on Thursday night, Hurricanes defenseman Jay Harrison fired a slap shot that just trickled between the legs of Capitals goalie Braden Holtby.  As the puck was going towards the goal line, Capitals defenseman John Carlson skated in and kept the puck out of the net.  The goal would have been a momentum killer going into the...

A Praiseworthy Triumvirate

What looked like a cool-headed decision by Matt Hendricks in the first period might well have been the reason the Capitals eked out their seventh straight win Saturday night against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Late in the first period, Tampa’s B.J. Crombeen appeared to take issue with a hit Hendricks laid on a Tampa player, but Hendricks seemingly refused to engage. Seconds later...

Lightning-Capitals Preview

If not for the rule of every division winner automatically making the playoffs, the weak Southeast Division may not have a postseason qualifier among it. The Washington Capitals, though, are doing all they can to prove they belong. Washington looks to extend its winning streak to seven by earning a fifth consecutive home victory over the slumping Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday...

This Is Why Some NHL Players Choose To Wear Visors

Nate Thompson took a nasty slap-shot to the visor courtesy of Mike Green during the Capitals and Lightning match-up Friday night, and I can only imagine what would have happened if he had elected to go with no visor. Below is all that remains of the visor. [The Big lead] Article found on: Next Impulse Sports
