njury — and as a result the Vancouver Canucks have recalled goaltender Joacim Eriksson to dress as Eddie Lack’s backup. Eriksson was told two days before Christmas that he would be called up, and he received the news while he and his girlfriend were having a couple of days off in the Big Apple. “It was a great Christmas present, that’s for sure,” said Eriksson, who has been spending much of this season adjusting to play in North America as the AHL Utica Comets’ No. 1 goalie. The first month-and-a-half of the season he seemed to struggle with the increased traffic in front of the goal, along with all the other adjustments the goaltenders need to make when they come over. But more recently the 23-year-old Swede has played very well in Utica, registering a couple of shutouts along the way. (His record is 8-10-1 and goals-against average of 2.77.) And while it’s unclear whether he will get any game action in this stint with Vancouver, he will at least get a sense of the action in the NHL while sitting on the bench. “I’ve known Eddie for a while and he’s a good guy,” said Eriksson, who was told by his agent before signing with Vancouver that he would be starting the season in the minors and would have to work his way up. “I may not get into a game, but I know I’m going to have to be ready to play, and I will be.” Lack has been a workhorse most of his career in North America, and while it’s unclear yet whether the 25-year-old Swede can run with the No. 1 job for any length of time, certainly playing several games in a row is not expected to tax him physically. Luongo was not on the ice when the team practised Friday. He started the Canucks’ final game before Christmas, on Dec. 22 against the Winnipeg Jets, but left the ice with 3:30 left in the first period after he first had his skate clipped by Jets defenceman Dustin Byfuglien and then got into a collision with winger Blake Wheeler. He was replaced by Lack, who stopped 15 of 16 shots as the Canucks won 2-1. Lack is now 6-2 on the season with a 1.93 GAA and .928 save percentage.
