The Toronto Maple Leafs bolstered their defense by acquiring Ryan O'Byrne from the Colorado Avalanche for a fourth-round draft pick in 2014.
O'Byrne has a goal and three assists in 34 games this season for Colorado, which currently owns the worst mark in the NHL.
The 28-year-old O'Byrne joins a Maple Leafs squad that's in the thick of the Eastern Conference playoff chase. He could help add more defensive stability to a team that's surrendering an average of 2.67 goals a game.
Colorado originally acquired O'Byrne from Montreal on Nov. 11, 2010. He was taken by the Canadiens in the third round of the 2003 draft.
The Leafs also announced the signing of defenseman Andrew MacWilliam to a two-year entry level contract. MacWilliam, 23, was selected by Toronto in the seventh round of the 2008 draft.

Maple Leafs forward Joffrey Lupul took a jarring hit Thursday night in the first period against the Philadelphia Flyers and didn't return to the game.
Lupul dug the puck out of the corner in the Toronto end when Jay Rosehill and Adam Hall sandwiched him with hits. He immediately skated off the ice and went to the dressing room with just over seven minutes left in the period...
If you watched the trade deadline coverage on TSN/NHL Network/Rogers Sportsnet, their respective trade trackers, monitored Twitter feeds, hung out on Facebook, or otherwise, the biggest story of the day was what didn't happen.
No Luongo Trade
And its little brother:
No Kiprusoff Trade
And wow, James Reimer is being nice about the whole thing (via a headline from the National...
Lupul found himself between Adam Hall and Jay Rosehill and you can see Lupul's head snap back but I don't really see anything flagrant on the play and no penalty was called.
Lupul went to the dressing room and has not returned.
Well it wasn’t the action-packed trade deadline for the Toronto Maple Leafs that some thought it could be. However the Maple Leafs weren’t completely silent, as they added 28-year-old, veteran defenseman Ryan O’Byrne from the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for a 4th round draft pick in this years draft. It’s obvious the Maple Leafs’ biggest [...]
Coming off of a strong comeback win last night in Philly over Montreal, the Flyers (16-17-3) will look to make it four straight wins as they battle the Toronto Maple Leafs (20-12-4). The Maple Leafs have bested the Orange & Black in their first two meetings this year. The big mystery surrounding tonight’s match-up is [...]
The Maple Leafs have signed goaltender Drew MacIntrye to an NHL contract for the remainder of the season.
The 29 year old MacIntyre was signed to an AHL-only contract in mid February, after James Reimerâs injury forced the recall of Marlies goalie Jussi Rynnas. Since then, the Prince Edward Island native has a 10-3-3- record, 1.85 GAA and has wrestled the number one job...
The Toronto Maple Leafs and Philadelphia Flyers both carry three-game winning streaks into their matchup Thursday night in Toronto, but under very different circumstances.
Toronto has its sights on ending the NHL's longest playoff drought after last reaching the postseason in 2004. While the Maple Leafs (20-12-4) own a share of fifth place in the Eastern Conference, the Flyers...
After speaking with Kiprusoffâs agent and representatives, the veteran netminder has agreed to play with the Toronto Maple Leafs, provided they offer him extra salary for his last year in the NHL.
Kiprusoff is expected to make 1.5M for his last NHL contract, one he wasnât anticipating playing through. After speaking with Leafs GM Dave Nonis, Miikka has agreed that he...
For the surprising Toronto Maple Leafs, their biggest weakness this year has been their defense, and their only move at the trade deadline was one to try to help remedy that, acquiring Ryan O’Byrne from the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for their fourth-round pick in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. O’Byrne is a 28-year-old native [...]
The Maple Leafs will be deeply involved in the pursuit of a veteran goaltender before the 3PM NHL Trade Deadline. The question is whether the recent rumors of attempting to convince Calgary goalie Miikka Kiprusoff to come to Toronto are an expression of genuine interest or an elaborate ruse to pay a more reasonable price for Vancouverâs Roberto Luongo.
The focus of Leafs...
Well, the Toronto Maple Leafs’ points streak is over. The Leafs lost to the Philadelphia Flyers 5-3 tonight. The Flyers were up 4-2 going into the third, and despite a great effort from the Leafs in the final stanza, they could not tie the game and take the loss. The Flyers out-shot the Maple Leafs 31-28.
