As much as Randy Carlyle likes the offensive skills that Jake Gardiner and Morgan Rielly can bring as a defence pair, the Maple Leafs coach also has a firm grip on what the youngsters can learn when put with a veteran. Gardiner and Rielly had been together for 10 games before Carlyle broke them up on Thursday night, after the two were weak on for the Florida Panthers’ first goal at the Air Canada Centre. Gardiner went to play with Cody Franson, a duo that worked last season; Rielly found himself with Tim Gleason, who has been a revelation since he was acquired from the Carolina Hurricanes on Jan. 1. “We have been contemplating splitting the kids up for a while,” Carlyle said. “Those guys can expect they will see some time together, but expect to see some time apart too. “Gleason has come in and been a heart-and-soul type for us. Blocking shots, physical, hard to play against. “That should give Morgan a little bit more freedom knowing that type of player is back there. You’re no...

Toronto Maple Leafs snap winning streak

It was bound to happen folks.  The Toronto Maple Leafs ended their six game winning streak this past week in Dallas, losing 7-1. All Leaf’s head coach, Randy Carlyle had to say about his team’s performance was frustrating and disappointing. Enough said. Now on to the game against the Winnipeg Jets. It was a better effort by the Leafs, although, it didn’t start that way at...

Peter Holland may miss Maple Leafs game with severe 'lace bite'

Apparently Holland's is so bad it has left him on crutches with a badly swollen foot. Forward James van Riemsdyk told TSN's Mark Masters it is the worst he's ever seen. Holland was skating in new skates and lace bite can be a common problem when breaking them in, but this sounds abnormally severe and painful. Maple Leafs head coach called the injury “crazy,” when...

Maple Leafs' Smith has setback, not ready to return

The Toronto Maple Leafs head into the game against the Florida Panthers on Thursday night having won six of the past eight games. The Maple Leafs thought they would get forward Trevor Smith back in the lineup, but he had a setback this week in his recovery from a broken hand. Bolland won't rush return to Leafs lineup

Dave Bolland repeated himself to hammer home the point. "Fifty-fifty," he said of his odds to return before the Olympic break. "Fifty-fifty." Bolland, who took part in his first full practice Friday since returning to the ice, continues to inch back toward a return from a severed left ankle tendon, one that has kept him out of the Toronto lineup since Nov...

Nazem Kadri’s Dirty Hit On Cody Ceci Leads To Game-Tying Goal (Video)

Toronto Maple Leafs forward Nazem Kadri did not win over any Ottawa Senators fans Saturday night. During the second period, Kadri tied up the game, but it wasn’t the goal that had the Sens up in arms — it was what led up to the goal. Late in the second period, Senators defenseman Cody Ceci was playing the puck behind the net. As his back was turned, Kadri came in hard and hammered...

Kadri helps Maple Leafs beat Panthers 6-3

Randy Carlyle said it was the best performance he had seen in a long time. Yup, it was one of those nights for Nazem Kadri. The 23-year-old center had three assists, and the Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Florida Panthers 6-3 on Thursday for their fifth consecutive home victory. Kadri has two goals and five assists during a four-game point streak. He picked up his 100th career assist...

Travis Yost: Kessel Goes Wild

A few thoughts after Toronto's 6-3 victory over Ottawa. (1) Obviously, the big story of the game was Phil Kessel doing what Phil Kessel does -- being the best player on the ice most every night. He's barely containable on a bad night and when he's got things clicking, he's one of the most effective forwards in the world. He's always had a knack for beating...

Maple Leafs double up Panthers at home

As the Year of the Horse begins in the Chinese calendar, the cavalry arrived to relieve the first line of the Maple Leafs and their sweat-stained stopper. After signs in recent games the team would finally address its over-reliance on Phil Kessel, James van Riemsdyk and Tyler Bozak, as well as make life easier on Jonathan Bernier, four goals from three different forwards and a defenceman...
