This is easily one of the most bizarre goals that has happened so far this year.  Colorado Avalanche forward Matt Duchene entered the zone about a foot ahead of this dump in, and seemed surprised when the whistle never blew to declare him offsides.  Duchene then corralled the puck and fired it past Nashville Predators goalie Chris Mason to give the Avs a 3-1 lead.  Obviously Nashville Predators players were irate over the ruling, and the wacky 2nd period fireworks weren’t over, as the period had six more goals scored in it after Duchene’s goal. Now, Duchene looks to be offsides, but if you watch the video closely, you see the puck go off Predators defenseman Scott Hannan’s stick (#22) and forward Craig Smith’s skate (#15).  The portion of the offsides rule that applies to this play is as follows: If a player legally carries or passes the puck back into his own defending zone while a player of the opposing team is in such defending zone, the off-side shall be ignored and play permitted to continue. Clearly the linesman ruled that the Predators brought the puck back into their own zone and therefore it was legal for Duchene to be in the zone, pick up the puck and score.  Whether this is the correct interpretation of the rule is up for debate, but with how quickly the game moves, it is understandable where this mistake could have occurred, especially since it hit two Predators players.  This play was not reviewable, because offsides is not a reviewable offense. Matt Duchene scores easy offside goal against Predators with linesman's blown call (Video)

Colorado Avalanche center Matt Duchene received a gift from an NHL linesman with a horrendous blown call that allowed him to score a goal during the second period of Monday's game against the Nashville Predators. This one wasn't even close, as Duchene was so far past the blue line on the play that he had to slow down, turn around and wait for the puck to catch up to...

Linesman misses offside call, results in goal

Sometimes in sports, the worst officiating calls are the ones that aren’t even made. That was the case Monday in Colorado where the Avalanche and Predators got together for a little holiday matinee hockey. The two clubs faced off in Denver in what ended up being a wild affair, with the Avs coming away with a 6-5 win. They were certainly helped by an egregious non-call, however...

Predators lose game on blown Matt Duchene offsides call

There have been more than a few questionable calls so far this season that have potentially cost teams a point or two in the standings. The latest victim? The Nashville Predators, who were scored upon by Matt Duchene - a very offside Matt Duchene. From TSN's Instagram feed comes the helpful illustration above. Yeah, it looks like he might be a little bit over the...

Duchene leads Avalanche past Predators

DENVER (AP) -- It took a disputed goal by Matt Duchene for the Colorado Avalanche to snap their string of nine straight losses to the Nashville Predators. Colorado's star looked offside on his second-period goal in the Avalanche's 6-5 win in a Monday matinee, but the officials ruled Nashville had brought the puck back into their zone. "The league already verified that...

A Mess In Denver

from Terry Frei of the Denver Post, Part of the Avalanche turmoil, of course, is fourth-year center Ryan O'Reilly's continued unsigned status as a restricted free agent. The Avalanche continues to have severe penalty-killing problems, and the franchise hasn't been able to come to terms with one of the top young defensive-oriented centers in the NHL — one who pitched...

How to Beat the Goalie: Varlamov

(Photo by: Dinor Blum/Flickr) Colorado Avalanche goaltender Semyon Varlamov has struggled so far this season. During the NHL work stoppage, Varlamov played on his mother land for Lokomotiv in the KHL, where he suffered a knee injury. The injury could be affecting him, but more realistically, it is the difficult transition from the European game to the North American...

Reactions: Awful non-offside call

(Photo by: @krazykylepreds) After witnessing one of the worst non-call in the Nashville Predators history, it is time for reaction to what happened around the league. What happened?: Matt Duchene was offside by a good three to four feet entering the Nashville zone. Duchene receives the puck and goes on a breakaway against Chris Mason. The Avalanche sniper was able...

Bleeding Heart

This week, Brian O'Reilly, father of Colorado Avalanche holdout Ryan O'Reilly, wrote a lengthy e-mail to the Denver Post explaining why his son has chosen not to re-sign with the club.  Some entertaining excerpts: If my son was getting 95 in math we wouldn’t ask him to get 65 so the rest of the students in the classroom could feel better about themselves. Many parents...

The missed off-sides call was egregious but Preds squandered other opportunities in loss…

It was one of the worst non-calls of all-time. St. Louis Blues color man and former NHL goaltender Darren Pang said it was the worst of all-time. Haven’t seen it yet? See for yourself. Peter McNab and the Colorado Avalanche TV crew are known for being some of the biggest “homers” in the league. So it speaks volumes when even they said Matt Duchene should have been whistled...
