Despite a 6-5 win over instate rival Pittsburgh Penguins, the team was dealt what could be a crippling blow. GM Paul Holmgren has announced that left wing Matt Read will miss six weeks with torn rib cage muscles. The injury reportedly came when Read suffered a massive hit from the Penguins Matt Kunitz towards the end of the first period. He never returned to the game, as the team initially announced he had an “upper body injury”. Today, the team confirmed the 26 year-old will be out until April at the earliest. The top scorer amongst rookies in 2012, Read carried his scoring prowess onto the 2013 season, leading all Flyers with 7 goals. With the offense completely stagnant, head coach Peter Laviolette made the call to replace Danny Briere on the first line with Read, and the move paid immediate dividends.
