I don't think I"m exaggerating to say the greater hockey world was eagerly anticipating Eugene Melnyk's next interview following this little number (which Graeme had some fun with here). Eugene talking into a microphone is pretty much always notable, but this instance went viral in ways past curious comments stayed a local footnote. The above video was shot today by The Score's Daniel Slater as Eugene spoke to the media following his annual Skate For Kids charitable event. Can't be sure but it sounds like Brent Wallace is the questioner here, so credit to him if that's the case. Cooke stuff starts @ 1:59. Q: You were very vocal after the Pittsburgh incident with Matt Cooke. Have you settled down knowing that Monday's the next game since then? Melnyk: Are we talking about Matt Cooke? Q: Sure. Melnyk: We're not talking about Matt Cooke. Um, look it's got nothing to do with settling down, um, I've committed to not saying anyt...

Jack Edwards blast Matt Cooke and then apologizes for it; also, Cooke hit on Adam McQuaid

So, I ask you. What is wrong with Jack Edward's comments? "Nominating Cooke for the Masterton is about the equivalent of nominating Sirhan Sirhan as the prisoner of the year," Edwards said. Personally, I don't have a problem with those comments. Cooke is a reckless, dirty and dangerous player, who is responsible for many random, bush league acts on the ice over...

Jack Edwards compares Matt Cooke to Sirhan Sirhan

Emotions were running high following a moving pregame ceremony as the Boston Bruins hosted the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday afternoon, just hours after an extensive manhunt for one of the Boston Marathon bombing suspects concluded.  Unfortunately, this emotion apparently got the best of NESN announcer Jack Edwards as he made an inappropriate (and bizarre) comparison between...

Video- Oh Jack Edwards

I am sorry for insulting Matt Cooke, the Pittsburgh Penguins, the National Hockey League, and anyone else upset by my Cooke comments. — Jack Edwards (@RealJackEdwards) April 20, 2013   I made a mistake. My fault all the way. This is my apology.Bad week, bad emotional reaction by me. — Jack Edwards (@RealJackEdwards) April 20, 2013 update 2:00pm, replaced the...

Boston announcer compares Matt Cooke to Sirhan Sirhan

We as sports fans are passionate, sometimes overly. Go on any message board or large commenting section about a controversial topic and you will observe anonymous individuals making statements that are more insulting and callous than they are creative. However, this is not something you expect from a commentator or play-by-play man in a sport. Though they may have the same type of...

Penguins clinch home ice in East

Hockey returned to Boston after a one-day postponement, and Jarome Iginla scored the tiebreaking goal that gave the Pittsburgh Penguins a 3-2 win over the Bruins on Saturday and home-ice advantage throughout the Eastern Conference playoffs. The game was pushed back by one day because of the manhunt for a suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings, who was captured Friday night. Before...

2013 Penguins a Team for the Ages

When a conversation takes place regarding the best teams in NHL history the names that usually come up are Gretzky’s Oilers, Lafleur’s Canadiens, and Orr’s Bruins. Based on the sheer talent that they display on a nightly basis,  could a case be made to include the 2013 Pittsburgh Penguins in that conversation? A case could [...]

QUICK CAP: The Penguins are the number one seed in the east after beating Bruins.

The Pens are the kings of the Eastern Conference. The target it locked on. But you know what they say...when you take a shot at the king you best not miss.   The Pens win 3-2 in an emotional situation in Boston. ( Should have been 3-1 the Bruins scored with two second left.)   Jarome Iginla got the goal-ahead goal midway through the third period on the...

John Toperzer: The @RealJackEdwards, really? Pens beat Boston, 3-2, Saturday afternoon

poll by twiigs.com If you missed Jack Edwards’s flippant, ignorant comments about Matt Cooke, here they are. The change in Matt Cooke following a suspension for elbowing the Rangers’ Ryan McDonagh 10 games before the end of the 2010-11 season is one of the most remarkable and unbelievable transformations I’ve ever seen in hockey. For a 30-something to...

Penguins-Bruins Preview

The Pittsburgh Penguins haven't missed a beat despite the absences of Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, and they're on the verge of securing the Eastern Conference title as a result. The Penguins have won five in a row and can eliminate the heavy hearted Boston Bruins from contention for the top spot in the Eastern Conference when the teams meet at TD Garden on Friday night...

John Toperzer: Game Night? Will the Pens play in Boston Friday night?

At the time of this writing, late Friday morning, the Penguins’ morning skate has been cancelled and it is unknown whether Friday’s game against the Bruins will go off as planned due to uncertainty in and around the city of Boston. Here is the audio from coach Dan Bylsma, taken Thursday after practice. The team recalled enforcer Steve MacIntyre on Thursday. Itâ...

43. Penguins at Bruins. The bWo is back jack! Welcome to the end of the new age

If you're new to DOY, then you have no idea why this is here. We have always equated hockey and wrestling. For some reason, they seem to fit well together. Ever since the Iginla thing went down - the Bruins/Penguins have acted like a WWF storyline so we figured we would actually write it like a WWF storyline. Enjoy today's preview - I worked hard on it, ha.  MARCH 25...

The Bruins, who currently sit in fourth place in the Eastern Conference standings, will host the conference-leading Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday night at TD Garden. Pittsburgh Penguins at Boston Bruins: Tomorrow, 12:30 pm

Game on. It means so much less than so many things in the grand scope of everything, but it will be nice to have hockey. Go Pens. Go Boston.
