The Los Angeles Kings and Dallas Stars appeared headed towards overtime on Sunday afternoon, however Kings center Michal Handzus apparently wanted to end the day a little quicker. Handzus’ goal with 20.8 seconds left in regulation broke a short-lived 2-2 tie, giving the Kings a very important two points in their victory over the Stars. The Kings entered today just one point behind the Stars, deadlocked in a four-way tie for fifth in the Western Conference. The starting goalies—Jonathan Quick for L.A. and Kari Lehtonen for Dallas—came in with 29 wins on the season. A tripping call on Loui Eriksson put the Kings on an early power play. They capitalized on it as Drew Doughty fired a slap shot from 61 feet out past Lehtonen 3:04 into the first. The play was reviewed by the officials to determine if Alexei Ponikarovsky had made contact with the puck and, if so, whether his stick was above the crossbar at the time.
