The Detroit Red Wings were in Glendale Thursday night to face the slumping Coyotes. This must be one of Detroit’s favorite road trips. The weather is sunny and 70s, the crowd has a huge percentage of Red Wings fans, and they win. Detroit has now won 8 of their last 9 road games against Phoenix, including knocking the Coyotes out of the playoffs each of the last two seasons with both series clinching wins coming in Glendale. The Coyotes continue to have no answer to Pavel Datsyuk and the top line of the Red Wings. Datsyuk added two assists Thursday night to give himself 30 such tallies in the past 30 games. The Wings’ top line of Datsyuk, Todd Bertuzzi and Johan Franzen is bigger, faster, tougher and more talented than their Coyotes counterparts. The Coyotes starting forwards of Shane Doan, Daymond Langkow, and team point leader Ray Whitney continue to get outplayed in matchups against Detroit. The Coyotes saving graces tonight came in the form of the fourth line. Bruiser Ra...

Bertuzzi Shines, Wings Grind Out Another One

Todd Bertuzzi isn’t exactly known for his finesse game around the NHL.  The 6’3″ 230 pound Canadian plays a more physical brand of hockey, thus making it all the more surprising when he brought out the spin-o-rama to help the Detroit Red Wings win their second consecutive shootout.  Even the Russian judge gave Bertuzzi a 10 for his game winning shootout goal....

An explanation for the reason why Red Wings’ Nicklas Lidstrom, Teemu Selanne are skipping ASG

For someone who claims to not care about the All-Star Game, ESPN’s Scott Burnside joined the Ottawa Citizen’s Ken Warren by launching into a scathing criticism of the NHL’s decision to allow Red Wings captain Nicklas Lidstrom and Anaheim Ducks forward Teemu Selanne to skip the All-Star weekend… I applauded commissioner Gary Bettman’s strong stance at...

Red Wings-Coyotes wrap-up: Bertuzzi, Howard, Wings prevail in a dog fight

The Detroit Red Wings’ 3-2 shootout victory over the Phoenix Coyotes, I daresay, kinda played out the way I thought it would: the Wings were just sloppy enough—and their power play was bad enough, going a hideous 0-for-5 in 10 minutes of PP time—to give the Coyotes both the first goal and a game-tying goal directly after Gilbert Brule got out of the penalty box...

Coyotes fall to Red Wings to open homestand

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) -- Todd Bertuzzi scored in regulation, then spun in front of the net and made a spectacular backhand shot in a shootout and the Detroit Red Wings won their fifth in a row to take the NHL overall lead, beating the Phoenix Coyotes 3-2 on Thursday night. Three of the wins in Detroit's streak have come in shootouts, two of them over Phoenix by identical scores...

GDT - Game #47:  Red Wings at Coyotes (9:00)

DET (30-15-1) are in PHX (21-9-7) tonight looking to win consecutive road games for the 1st time in six weeks. Road defense plagues DET, they have allowed 69 goals on the road - nearly double the 36 yielded at home. The Wings 30 victories lead the NHL, yet they find themselves 4th in the West, second in the Central. The Dogs were pounded by ANA last night, 6-2. PHX have dropped...

Reactions: Detroit responds to Red Wings, Maple Leafs at The Big House for Winter Classic

Welcome to Friday’s Reactions, a weekly series in which we round up the biggest news of the week into one post of reactions from Twitter, and beyond. The dust has settled. Next year’s Winter Classic will feature two storied teams at a storied arena. However, it will be about an hour west of Detroit, at The Big House, home to the University of Michigan Wolverines football...

Red Wings-Blue Jackets game-day udpates: little news is good news (and a Slava Fetisov update)

As the Detroit Red Wings prepare to face off against the Columbus Blue Jackets tonight (7 PM EST, FSD Plus/FS Ohio/WXYT), little news is in fact excellent news. MLive’s Ansar Khan reports via Twitter that the Wings will make only one subtle tweak, inserting a player who Columbus banished to the minors last season—but they won’t see a certain former Wing tonight...

Red Wings-Coyotes Preview

The Detroit Red Wings remain one of the league's top teams despite their well-documented road struggles. They haven't had much trouble when visiting the Phoenix Coyotes in recent years. Detroit seeks a second consecutive road win for the first time in six weeks when it faces slumping Phoenix on Thursday night. The Red Wings (30-15-1) are one point behind Western Conference...

Mark Spizzirri: Back on top...for now!

After an eventful three game stretch over four days which saw the Red Wings win in overtime, in a blowout and via the shootout last night in Dallas vs. the Stars, Detroit suddenly finds themselves once again atop the Western Conference standings, albeit possibly for a very short time given Chicago's home contest tonight vs. the Buffalo Sabres. Nevertheless, last night'...

Central Contenders Clash as Blues Visit Detroit

Looking for NHL Odds? The Red Wings are in pole position in the heated Central Division but with fast-rising St. Louis gaining traction behind them it may not be for long. Can the veterans behind Detroit’s continued dominance keep ahead of David Backes, T.J. Oshie and the Blues? Though the Blues have flirted with success over the past two seasons, they’ve only actually qualified...
