Yesterday I wrote that I think Erik Karlsson of the Ottawa Senators is the most improved player this season.  Commenters quickly pointed out Brian Elliott of the St Louis Blues.  While Elliott has had a huge statistical improvement in his play this season, I do not see it as a huge sustained improvement.  I wouldn’t list him among the elite goalies in the NHL.  There are several better goalies around while Karlsson is one of the best defencemen in the game.  In a fantasy draft next season Karlsson should be picked well before Elliott. In fact I wouldn’t call Elliott the most improved goalie in the league this year.  That honor would go to Jonathan Quick in Los Angeles. Continue reading "Most Improved Goalie This Season"

Report: Karlsson's shot at a top ten finish

It's safe to assume Erik Karlsson is going to post more points than any other defenseman this season. In fact, he's a remarkable 25 points up on current runner-ups Dustin Byfuglien and Brian Campbell. The question now: where will he finish among all skaters? With 78 points on the year, Karlsson is just two shy of the all-time mark for a Swedish blueliner, set by Nicklas Lidstrom...

Elliott's shutout streak ends with loss to Wings

ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Johan Franzen scored on consecutive shots in the third period to end Brian Elliott's shutout streak after more than 3 1-2 games, and Todd Bertuzzi netted the lone goal in a shootout as the Detroit Red Wings rallied to beat the St. Louis Blues 3-2 on Wednesday night. Pavel Datsyuk set up both regulation goals for the Red Wings, who moved a point ahead of Nashville...

Most Improved Player This Season

One award the NHL does not offer that I think should exist is a most improved player award.  If such a thing existed, I think the clear winner this year should be Erik Karlsson of the Ottawa Senators.  He is the runaway top scoring defenceman in the NHL.  His defence is rapidly improving and this makes him a Norris Trophy candidate.  Some see him as the frontrunner, though I...

The quickening effect

Some time back, Randy or Drew mentioned Highlander during a game without saying the obvious thing, the thing you say when you mention Highlander: “There can be only one.”  No, I think he said something about the quickening.  I don’t think it was a game against the Kings but a discussion of Jonathan Quick is the obvious next step. Does Quick get stronger with every team he...

Vezina comparison: Quick vs. Lundqvist

The race for the Vezina trophy may come down to three finalists, but this year it’s a two horse race between Henrik Lundqvist and Jonathan Quick. To be fair, both are very deserving of the award. They have had tremendous years, and are clearly the two best goalies this year. While we have been spoiled by having the best goalie in the world in net, the Kings would not be anywhere...

Erik Karlsson is Not Mike Green

The Norris Trophy debate is quite interesting this year because there's quite a few good candidates. Zdeno Chara and Nick Lidstrom are both going to be in the running based off their reputation, while guys like Shea Weber, Alex Pietrangelo and Ryan Suter are drumming up their own hype because of their excellent all around games. The most interesting (and controversial cases...

Red Wings get past Blues in shootout

Johan Franzen scored on consecutive shots in the third period to end Brian Elliott's shutout streak after more than 3 1/2 games, and Todd Bertuzzi netted the lone goal in a shootout as the Detroit Red Wings rallied to beat the St. Louis Blues 3-2 on Wednesday night. Pavel Datsyuk set up both regulation goals for the Red Wings, who moved a point ahead of Nashville for fourth...

Could Quick Steal Vezina from Lundqvist?

Greg Wyshynski at Puck Daddy tries to make a compelling argument for Jonathan Quick to win the Vezina Trophy over Henrik Lundqvist..."But if you see the Vezina as an award not only for the goalie "adjudged to be the best at this position" but also the goalie who was vital to his team's success, then Jonathan Quick beats Henrik Lundqvist for the award. He has better...

GDT - Game #80:  Red Wings at Blues (7:30)

For DET (47-27-5) to recapture 2nd place in the Central from NSH (2-1 SO winners over MIN last night), the Wings are going to have to pull a rabbit out of their hat against STL (48-21-10), and:  (A)  win on the road (where DET are 16-21-3 (22nd), (B) win on the road against the Blues #1 in the league home ice record (30-5-4), and as if that weren’t a tall enough task (C) beat...
