Even in the absence of NHL action, hockey fans have still been treated to some pretty intense fights of late. A couple of teams from the Southern Professional Hockey League apparently took note, and they delivered what can only be described as an all-out donnybrook.
The Mississippi Surge and Huntsville Havoc of the SPHL have suddenly gained Internet fame after their melee from this past weekend that resulted in multiple suspensions. The Havoc’s Corey Fulton was pulled onto the Surge bench after engaging with an opponent, at which point several Mississippi players pummeled the Huntsville winger. That resulted in Fulton’s teammates rushing to his aid, and a huge brawl breaking out between the two squads.
The action picked up both on the ice and on the bench, with the teams’ trainers even getting into a shouting match. The brawl appeared to be over and done with for a brief moment, but the fighting once again picked up, with punches — and even sticks — flying left and right.
Eventually, the referees appeared to restore order, but not before plenty of blows were dished out and the commentator called one player “a jerk.” Chances are that was the cleanest word exchanged between the two teams, though.
Fulton was suspended four games for his participation, while fellow Havoc players Chapen LeBlond and Matt Smyth were each suspended for five games each. Huntsville’s Bill Baker was suspended for three games and head coach Glenn Detulleo was suspended for two games. Mississippi’s Brandon Kosolofsky was suspended six games and Anthony Collins was suspended three. All of the above players, along with Huntsville’s Bryant Doerrsam and Ian Boots, were fined an undisclosed amount.
