Philadelphia Flyers goalie Steve Mason has never been afraid to try out a new helmet design. As a matter of fact, his most recent redesign is already his second since being traded to Philadelphia in April. Mason’s first helmet with the Flyers featured a lot of stitches, a shredded Flyers logo, a zombie from the Walking Dead, and his English Bulldog named George. What could possibly be next? A sketch of Mason’s new cage art, complete with zombie Revolutionaries. (From NHL.com) Well, according to NHL.com’s Adam Kimelman, Mason will sport a full-blown Philadelphia zombie apocalypse helmet for his first full season with the team. The mask will prominently feature Betsy Ross, Benjamin Franklin, and George Washington leading the zombie charge as the apocalypse takes over Philadelphia in 1776. Franny Drummond, the designer of the helmet, said Mason wanted a new spin on a lot of horror-type qualities that he has had on past helmets. “He said, ‘I want horror, but without a horror movie,’ ” Drummond told NHL.com. “He [Mason] said, ‘why don’t we do Ben Franklin as a zombie,’ [and] I said, ‘I guess we could do it.’ I said I’ll do sketches, over the summer we’ll go back and forth over design work, and this is basically what I came up with. Betsy Ross, any historical figures, and taking it and making it into a zombie apocalypse that hit Philadelphia in 1776.” “This mask is going to have a lot of glowing, very eerie,” he said. “That’s why with Betsy Ross, if you notice the background, she’s got the candle with the smoke coming up. She’s going to be black and white like an old photograph, and then it’ll have a little bit of backlit, so you’ll see the orange glow off her shoulder.” Mason is a self-proclaimed fan of The Walking Dead, so the zombie theme is fitting for him and culturally appealing as well. This might not be the only zombie helmet we see from Mason this season, as Drummond says Mason likes to try different designs regularly. “Derek [Settlemyre, Flyers head equipment manager] said he changes them constantly,” Drummond said. “He’s always changing gear, so you get a new lid and go.” You can watch the full video from NHL.com with Drummond below: Around the Rink Columnist Joe Ray - @joeray119 Follow us on Twitter - @ATRSportsKings Like us on Facebook - Around the Rink Find Joe on Google+
