A gruesome hockey injury in Canada is causing debate after a teenage player took a two-hander to the face during a Quebec Major Junior Hockey League game.

Brian Lovell, 17, suffered a broken jaw when 19-year-old Ross Johnston slashed him across the face with his stick. But that’s just the gist of the story.

As seen in the video below, Johnson’s stick got caught in the dashboard, and he tried to remove it in such a violent fashion that, once dislodged, the momentum sent the stick right across Lovell’s grill. Some believe it was purely accidental, while others think Johnson played it off as if it were an accident.

  • Sorry, but that looks anything but accidental. It's a two-handed assault. There are reasons they have regs against high sticks, this is one of the greater ones. The kid should be bounced out of the league for at least twice as long as his victim is healing, if not permanently!
  • Whether is accidental or not is irrelevant. He did not have control over his stick. Possibly to the point of gross negligence. I agree it amounts to a two-handed assault and he should be bounced from the league indefinately.
