My 10 All-Time Favorite Goaltenders

Posted July 18, 2008 on bzr034's Blog:
This is my list of favorite goaltenders of all-time. It's not just stat based, so people will disagree with a lot most likely. I just thought it would be fun to try the list maker.

    John Vanbiesbrouck

He was always my favorite growing up. I've always had a thing for American goalies and he is one of the best of all-time (and is the best American) stats-wise. I tried as hard as I could to mimic his inverted-V style when I played and it served me well through the years. Even with only one Vezina to his name, 374 career wins and 40 shutouts (the most by an American).

    Martin Brodeur

Marty is going to break a lot of Roy's records in the next few years and I look forward to it. He is so much fun to watch and he doesn't appear to be slowing down. I wouldn't be surprised if he pulled a Hasek and played for eight more years. 538 wins (2nd All-time), eleven consecutive 35-win seasons, twelve consecutive 30-win seasons, seven 40-win seasons and the most wins in a regular season with 48. He'd be number one if Beez wasn't a childhood idol.

    Patrick Roy

Quite possibly the greatest ever to strap on the pads, P. Roy was an inspiration to goalies everywhere. The man may have been crazy and a huge jackass, but he sure could play. 551 career wins, 151 playoff wins, three Conn Smythes, three Vezinas and four Stanley Cups. The man has more awards than you can shake a stick at. A shame Brodeur will be taking so many, although he's still amazing.

    Dominik Hasek

Speaking of Dom, what isn't there to say. If he hangs them up, he'll go to the Hall in a few years. If he keeps playing, I'm sure someone will be willing to sign him. His style of play is unique to say the least. This human slinky has put up great numbers while netting the Vezina six times throughout his career.

    Grant Fuhr

Fuhr is an all-time great, not only just goalies. He's the oldest guy on this list and for good reason. He only won one Vezina, but five Cups while in Edmonton. He only had 316 wins in his career. I say only because he was on the Oilers in the 80's. For some reason I thought he'd have had more. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2003.

    Ed Belfour

Eddie the Eagle has always intrigued me since his days in Chicago. The North Stars moved when I was 6, so I started liking the Blackhawks soon after. They were really good back then, could you blame me? With his patented Eagle Mask that followed him wherever he went, Belfour racked up 484 career wins, two Vezinas and one Stanley Cup.

    Tom Barrasso

Barrasso is second all-time in wins for an American born player with 369. One Vezina and two Cups to his name, Barrasso will be most remembered as the backstop for the Pens during their glory years in the early 90's. He also helped bring silver home during the 2002 Olympics.

    Olaf Kolzig

It's sad to think Ziggy won't finish his career as a Cap. He notched his 300th win last year and then was replaced by Cristobal Huet, Zig won the Vezina in 2000 and does great work off the ice in the fight against autism. Hopefully he can get some play time down in Tampa, although he'll have a tough time with Mike Smith being there.

    Ron Hextall

Four shy of 300 wins, Hextall WAS the Flyers for more than a decade. His greatest year came in 1987 when he won the Vezina and Conn Smythe, also on December 8th of that year when he netted the first goal ever scored by a goaltender while actually shooting the puck. Sadly, Hextall never hoisted the Cup in his career.

    Mike Richter

Remember when I said I like American goalies? This makes three. Richter is the third of three Americans with more than 300 wins (301). He never won the Vezina, but he did win the Cup in '94 and the 2002 Olympic team I mentioned before.

  • Awesome list. You really think Hextall is above Richter?
  • I put Hex above because I think he brought more to the position as a whole. Both are amazing in their own rights. But I had to put one at 9 and one at 10, and that's just how it shook out.
  • Holy 1990s Batman! This reminds me of everyone I watched growing up.
  • I'm only 21, so it's kind of skewed that way.
  • Hextall all the way!
  • Gotta love Patrick Roy
  • It made me a little sad that it was my team that ended his career, but it was bound to happen. P. Roy was and still is amazing.

  • GREAT ARTICLE.
This is what Yardbarker is ALL about.
Great Article concept, great opinions that you backed up.
Nice Job, and I agree with every one of those picks.
  • like the list tc but where is ken dryden or pelle lindberg???? bernie parent too??? great list list though!!!
  • I made the list... And I think what counted most against those guys is I'm 21 and never saw them play outside of highlight reels.
  • yeah, i didn't make the list, bzr34 did
  • LOL!!!! sorry!!! i feel like an idiot now!!!
  • How on earth can you leave off CHRIS OSGOOD ! I understand hat he had a great defense in front of him but if your gonna go by stats OSGOOD has got to be on this list . Now your entitled to your own opinion but come on hes one of the best ,and I'm a RANGERS fan . Anyway GREAT topic and article but one more thing MIKE RICHTER #10 no way ! he belongs higher up on this list . RICHTER also has an all-star MVP . I was at MSG and can assure you this guy sparkled amongst the many all-stars in attendance that night . He was so good it sent chills up my spine . I do give you props on the BEEZER hes one of my favorites as well . I will assume you live on the east coast and didn't see much of OSGOOD either .
  • I'm from Minnesota and saw Osgood quite a bit. He's a great player but he hasn't really had the impact on me as a player or a fan that the others did. Sure he has the stats, but who would you take off?
  • Osgood could replace any one on your list from # 5 down . thats my opinion . Dont take it as critisism ,your list is cool ,but of course I think richter should be much higher on this list ! THUMBS UP KID !
