It’s playoff time in The NHL, and for most players, that means growing a playoff beard. The playoff beard has been a long honored tradition in The NHL, unless of course, your name is Patrik Elias.

One may look at Elias and wonder “Can he not grow a beard?” or “Does he not believe in tradition?”. We caught up with Elias to get the scoop. Here’s what he had to say.

“No, I don’t grow a playoff beard on my face, because it gets really itchy, and I am a messy eater, which is a disaster if you have a beard. My teammates and I have an agreement, that while they grow out their playoff beards, I grow out my pubes.”

Devils Captain Zach Parise was supportive when asked about Elias’s alternative tradition.

“Hey, it’s great for the team. None of us really check to make sure that he’s doing it, we go on the honor code here, but Patrik is a stand up guy.”

Elias even contributes to charity by growing his pubes, donating the shavings at the end of the season to a charity called “Pubes for Pads”. PFP makes brillo pads out of donated pubes and gives them to failing restaurants that can’t afford cleaning supplies.

“It’s exciting to be in the playoffs, it’s exciting to carry on tradition, and it feels great to give back” said Elias.

The Devils have a 3 games to 1 series lead on The Flyers, and play game 5 tonight at 7:30pm.
