Nashville-Detroit is another matchup that will be a great series but for different reasons than the four/five matchup in the East. It’s also another case of how unfortunate it is to lose one of these teams in the first round. The Nashville Predators' Shea Weber (By Dan4th Nicholas from Cambridge, MA, USA via Wikimedia Commons) Detroit got off to a great start this season and set the record for consecutive home wins, but their play outside of Joe Louis Arena is simply atrocious. They are 31-7-3 at home and 17-21-3 on the road. Those numbers aren’t sustainable and they’re at risk of their first opening round defeat since 2005-06. Keys for Nashville’s Success The key to Nashville’s success this season has been defense. The Predators have the best defensive pairing in Shea Weber and Ryan Suter and also have some of the best two way centers in the game in Mike Fisher, David Legwand, and Paul Gaustad. Their stellar defense, combined with Vezina candidate Pekka Rinne, should give the ...

Preds defenseman Gill a game-time decision

NASHVILLE Predators coach Barry Trotz said on Tuesday that defenseman Hal Gill, a key acquisition before the NHL's trading deadline, would be a game-time decision with a lower-body injury on Wednesday for Game 1 of his team's Western Conference Quarterfinal series with Detroit. The Predators acquired the 6-foot-7, 240-pound Gill along with a fifth-round conditional pick...

NHL playoffs begin, Helm's return on track

Detroit -- The Red Wings are very close to being back to full health. Darren Helm, who missed the last 10 games of the regular season with a knee injury, could return for Game 1 of the first-round series against the Nashville Predators. "Slight possibility, hopefully if it feels really good tomorrow I'll go, if not then our goal was Game 2 or 3 anyway," Helm said...

Wings feeling healthy as NHL Playoffs start

Darren Helm, who missed the last 10 games of the regular season with a knee injury, could return for Game 1 of the first-round series against the Nashville Predators. I’ll take the Detroit Red Wings in five

Yes, FIVE.  Sure, many people love the Nashville Predators, and some even have them going to the Stanley Cup Finals, but the Red Wings are being underestimated once again.  With a finally healthy team accompanied with a plethora of playoff experience, the Red Wings will win this series quicker than most would think. Nashville has vastly improved over the last several years, building...

Preds' home ice could be a big key vs. Red Wings

The Predators finished off their slate of games in the 2011-12 regular season with a strong offensive victory, 6-1 over the Colorado Avalanche. But it was tough to gauge the Predators following the win. They won by a lot, but they were without their usual first line of Martin Erat, Sergei Kostitsyn and Mike Fisher -- who were given the night off. They didn't have Hal Gill or...

Trotz Wants To Continue To Play The “Nashville Way”

from David Climer of The Tennessean, Trotz believes the key to managing a comparative wealth of riches is to remain true to yourself. A more talented roster does not mean you quit playing a style of hockey that he calls “the Predators’ way.” “Just because we added people in the lineup doesn’t mean we change our game,” he said. “There are certain foundations in your...

Detroit Red Wings road to the Stanley Cup begins with hot Nashville team in Round 1

The Detroit Red Wings quest for the Cup begins... After an up and down season, the Detroit Red Wings finally know who they will be facing in the first round of the NHL Playoffs.  The Nashville Predators welcome the Red Wings to the Music City, and believe me, both teams are built for long runs.  After an entire 82 game season, the Wings take a modest 4-4-2 record into the playoffs...

Red Wings Playoff Preview: Round 1

If the Red Wings "flip the switch" in this series, it could be over in 4. If they don't "flip the switch" in this series, it could be over in 4. I'm going to avoid the urge to predict which team will show up because there's just no way for me to tell. Instead, I'll look at stats and head-to-head match ups to see if we can figure out how this series...

Gill Has Size and Strength…But Does He Use Them?

Photo by: Ronald Martinez/Getty Images Hal Gill has been possibly the most notable pick-up at the trade deadline for the Nashville Predators. He has size and strength, can out poke check any forward by a good foot and a half of stick and has been the difference maker on the Predators penalty kill that has risen to 10th in the NHL. Although he lacks speed due to his lumbering huge...

Red Wings-Predators Preview

Pekka Rinne fills up so much of the net at 6-foot-5, and the Nashville goaltender led the NHL with 43 wins while facing more shots than anyone else. Jimmy Howard was on quite the run for Detroit himself, leading the league in wins and on pace to top Terry Sawchuk's franchise record of 44 victories himself before breaking his index finger and then injuring his groin. Nashville...

Can The Wings Beat Rinne?

Paul for George… from Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press, When the Red Wings open their series against the Nashville Predators on Wednesday, they face one of the game’s biggest goaltenders—Rinne is 6-feet-5.
