Niklas Kronwall doesn't limit the punishment he dishes out to NHL arenas. The Red Wings defenseman absolutely unleashed on Kaspars Saulietis at the IIHF World Championship in Sweden. Kronwall (playing for Sweden) crushed Saulietis (playing for Latvia) in open ice along the boards. Saulietis immediately went crashing to the ice on his back, drawing a big response from the hockey enthusiasts in attendance. The Stanley Cup playoffs have been far more punishing than usual this season, but few hits seen so far compare to this particular blow delivered by Kronwall. Check it out in the video below. A hat tip...

Kronwalling goes International at the World Championship
Red Wing defenseman/Mack truck Niklas Kronwall drove himself over to Stockholm Sweden for the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championships. Just because Nick is done Kronwalling in the red and white, didn’t mean he was done until next season. Playing for his native Sweden, Kronwall flattened Latvia’s Kaspars Saulietis during a game Tuesday.

No news is no news regarding Red Wings captain Nicklas Lidstrom’s future
Red Wings captain Nicklas Lidstrom’s currently signing autographs at Warrior Hockey’s corporate headquarters, and the Detroit News dispatched Ted Kulfan to the scene to find out whether Lidstrom’s made any progress toward deciding whether to return for at least one more year. The 42-year-old’s answer is consistent with his usual, “I’ll figure it out by the NHL Awards”...
Red Wings overnight report: talking about Tatar, Jarnkrok and Brunnstrom, and the weekend Worlds
After receiving nothing less than a smorgasbord of World Championship coverage from the NBC Sports Network on Thursday, whoever’s in charge of scheduling events decided that one cannot piggyback TSN’s coverage when there are perfectly good reruns of fishing shows which must take precedence over hockey, so hockey die-hards like myself have set their alarms and are preparing to...
Red Wings fans, it’s time (again) to vote for Pavel Datsyuk as EA Sports’ NHL 13 cover athlete
As the Red Wings’ organization engages fans via Twitter, Facebook, a special wallpaper on the team’s official website and via plain old word of mouth (I’m sure the press release is to come), here’s the dealy-o, fellow Wings fans:
Pavel Datsyuk faces off against John Tavares in the semifinals of EA Sports’ NHL 13 Cover Vote from today until Wednesday, May 23rd, and while...

Red Wings afternoon news: Tomas Jurco’s time to shine; MacDonald to help firefighters on Saturday
Now that the NBC Sports Network has had its fill of the World Championships—if you want to watch Tomas Tatar’s Slovaks take on the Czechs tomorrow at 7:30 AM EDT, or Pavel Datsyuk’s Russians take on Valtteri Filppula’s Finns at 11:30 AM, you’ll have to do so online, and the same is true for the Gold and Bronze medal games at 9 AM and 1:30 PM EDT, respectively, on Sunday...
Red Wings overnight report: Preparing for the Medal Round, anti-Semin and a Sea Dog stumble
Today represents the last day of competition at the World Championships in Helsinki, Finland, and from a Red Wings fan’s perspective, three of the Wings’ four remaining participants in Russia’s Pavel Datsyuk, Slovakia’s Tomas Tatar, Finland’s Valtteri Filppula and/or non-playing prospect Petr Mrazek will come home with medals, though only one might come home satisfied with...
Red Wings at the Worlds, Semifinals: Tatar’s Slovaks will tangle with Datsyuk’s Russians for Gold
Book the times, folks: Team Slovakia defeated the Czech Republic on three goals from Miroslav Satan’s line, including 2 from Satan himself, and Jan Laco played fantatstic in the Czechs’ crease, out-dueling Jakub Kovar by a wide margin, and after the Czechs lost Martin Erat to a shoulder or head injury, they lost their focus and started making mistakes which the Czechs pounced...
Red Wings at the Worlds, Quarterfinal wrap-up and foreign language fly-bys: upsets rule Thursday
Update: Swell, this post was supposed to hit at 3 AM…Curses: The vast majority of the Detroit Red Wings’ participants at the World Championships—including Justin Abdelkader, Jonathan Ericsson, Johan Franzen (Expressen, Aftonbladet and Marie Hallman report that he plain old came down with a fever), Jimmy Howard, Calle Jarnkrok, Niklas Kronwall, Kyle Quincey Henrik Zetterberg—were...
Red Wings at the Worlds, medal round: Pavel Datsyuk’s Russians steamroll Slovakia
Today’s bronze medal game between Finland and the victorious Czechs was a tightly-contested contest by comparison to the gold medal game.
Pavel Datsyuk registered 2 assists—on two goals by Alexander Semin, including a glorious takeaway on the 4-1 goal—and a goal of his own via an assist from Semin to salt the game away…
As the tournament-unbeaten Russians slowly stirred...
Last-last-last-minute notification of a Nicklas Lidstrom/Danny Cleary appearance
This one somehow slid through the radar screen, but if you’ve got lunch free today, Michigan Hockey Now’s Stefan Kubus (via RedWingsFeed) reports that Warrior Hockey endorsees Danny Cleary, Shawn Horcoff and one Nicklas Lidstrom will make an appearance and sign autographs at Warrior Hockey’s “tent sale” at their corporate headquarters in Warren, MI today at noon.
Report: Former Red Wing Shawn Burr to have bone marrow transplant
Former Red Wing Shawn Burr is facing the fight of his life these days. After ungoing 21 sessions of chemotherapy to fight off cancer, Burr was told last year that he had beaten cancer. But now, the cancer is back. Burr is set to undergo a bone marrow transplant that will hopefully fend off acute myeloid leukemia, a bone marrow cancer in which abnormal white cells attack normal...
Tournament Time: Detroit Red Wings Style
By Rhys Richards (@RREsq)
Detroit Red Wings fans undoubtedly wish that their team was still playing in the 2012 Stanley Cup playoffs, but several Detroit regulars and prospects continue their seasons at the World Championship and Memorial Cup.
Superstar forward Henrik Zetterberg will finish third in scoring in Helsinki with three goals and twelve assists in eight games. Sweden fell...
Red Wings at the Worlds, Semifinals: Russia pushes the ‘easy’ button, wins 6-2
It wasn’t even a contest. While Pavel Datsyuk was held off the scoresheet, a mistake-prone Finnish defense and a very, very leaky Pettri Vehanen could not hold off the Russian Machine, and with only the line of Valtteri Filppula, Mikko Koivu and Jussi Jokinen providing offense, the Finns couldn’t out-score their mistakes.
As such, Russia handed Finland a 6-2 defeat, cruising...
