Daniel Alfredsson made his highly anticipated return to Ottawa on Wednesday night after signing with the Detroit Red Wings this offseason. This was Alfredsson’s first game against his former team, the team he captained, the team he loved. “Obviously I’ve got a lot of good friends on the other side,” Alfredsson said. “I think it will be a relief once the puck drops.” “There will be a lot of emotion going into the game. But it’s a bit exciting, too.” Alfredsson’s first game against his former team was at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit. Lucky him. The Red Wings will travel to Ottawa for a no doubt pressure packed matchup on December 1st. “That’s going to be more emotional, there’s no question,” the 40-year-old right-winger said. “The way the schedule works out, maybe it is a good thing. “But you’re going to have to deal with it. It’s not something I want to hide from, either.” Alfredsson had played in 1,078 games and recorded 426 goals and 682 assists with the Ottawa Senators and in this offseason he made the decision to move on from Ottawa to Detroit. Alfredsson’s decision is one that some Senators fans will never forgive and all Sens fans will never forget. The Sens were able to give their fans some sense of comfort on Wednesday night as they were able to go into Detroit and trump the Red Wings at home 6-1. Jason Spezza and Bobby Ryan who have been counted on to replace Alfredsson’s production for the Senators were able to do just that, scoring two goals a piece and led the Sens to an impressive victory in Detroit. Alfredsson had two shots with two hits in 16:12 of total ice time for the Red Wings but was unable to record a point in the Wednesday night loss. Ottawa seems to have moved on from life with Daniel Alfredsson but just like in a messy divorce there may be some secrets left unsaid. Only time will tell if this is in fact a messy divorce or just a temporary separation as I’m sure Alfie is hoping to have his jersey hoisted up in the rafters back in Ottawa some day.
