Calling the conditions “kind of dangerous” and “kind of scary” Alex Ovechkin was able to get through his 28th birthday without sustaining an injury in the Caps’ 3-2 shootout loss to the Boston Bruins Tuesday night at 1st Mariner Arena. With 4 minutes to play in the second period Ovechkin crashed into the boards dislodging the plexiglass. The pane of glass narrowly missed Ovechkin and broke on the ice. "I just try to get the hit and I miss it" Ovechkin said. "I hit the glass and it just crashes. I don’t know if I’m too strong or glass not that strong." “Watching the replay that was very scary” Capitals coach Adam Oates said. “I think that’s what happens when you don’t play in a building for a while. But it didn’t happen again so good for that.” 1st Mariner Arena is 51 years old and has not hosted a hockey game since the Caps played a preseason game there in 2011. Prior to that it had been 14 years since professional hockey was played in Baltimore. Ovechkin who complained about the ice conditions when the Caps played in Baltimore two years ago said the ice was “not that good” Tuesday night. “You can't hold the puck you can't shoot it.” Ovechkin said. “Afraid to go to the boards because it’s too dangerous.”
