Covering the NHL beat is grueling work (we've heard), with long nights after games with little time before copy is due, language barriers in the multinational league, and, as you might imagine, less than fragrant work environs. And it's not just the unparalleled smell of game-worn hockey gloves. Rob Chakler, a staff writer for the Trentonian (and the blog Sean Avery's Sloppy Seconds), may not have gotten the quote he was looking for while waiting out Alex Ovechkin last night, but he probably got a little more than he was expecting.
From SASS:
There were three other reporters, myself and Ovechkin in the room. I asked the Capitals PR woman if I could speak with him, but she told me, "He's already spoken to the media." I mean, come on. There were five people in the room and he was just sitting there!
Anyway, I hung out for a little while longer in hopes that something good would come of the situation. He was sitting in just in hockey pants, leaning back against a locker watching Steve Coates on Flyers Post Game Live talk about how good he is on TV. It was pretty interesting to observe that. I've always wondered if athletes like to watch analysts praise or critique their craft on television. Apparently they do.
Then, looking down at the game's score sheet, he let three loud farts rip in less than a minute. Then, his next words were the only quote I got from Alexander the Great. So since the Caps PR Nazi deemed he was no longer allowed to speak, this is the only quote I can print.
After the third, and loudest, one, the others in the room just looked at him and he responded, "FUCK! What the hell is wrong with my ass?"
There you have it. Instead of trying to coax him into calling Sydney [sic] Crosby a pussy compared to Mike Richards, that's what I got. I guess I'll take it.
Chakler also names Ryan Howard as a locker room assasin. Hard to imagine why the Caps PR person was so difficult, eh?
Deadspin's "Dark Side of the Locker Room" is on line 1. The Trentonian is on 2.
