Veterans Owen Nolan and Todd Fedoruk have been signed by Vancouver Canucks general manager Mike Gillis to professional tryout contracts. This move was quite surprising to me as the Canucks are one of the deepest teams in the NHL. But after a disappointing Stanley Cup Finals, Mike Gillis is finding value anywhere he can.
Nolan who is a very well-known player in the NHL, spent last season in the Swiss-A league. He recorded 26 points in 24 games with Zurich. Nolan has played 1200 NHL games and has scored 422 goals with 885 points. Nolan would give the Canucks a good veteran presence and a significant amount of leadership on and off the ice.
Fedoruk, 32, who has played with 6 NHL teams; last one was with the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2009/10. Todd is now pushing for another NHL stint after a one year layoff.
