SUNRISE, Fla. -- Through the first six games of the season, the skidding Panthers had scored just one goal in the third period en route to the NHL's worst record. On Thursday night, Florida (2-5) erupted for five in a tie game -- also overcoming two one-goal deficits -- to snap its five-game losing streak. Right winger Alex Kovalev's power-play goal with 7:23 remaining turned out to be the winner as the Panthers beat the Winnipeg Jets 6-3 in front of 15,731 at the BB&T Center. Kovalev's second goal of the season came on a snap shot to the goalie's glove side, set up by center Tomas Fleischmann and right winger Tomas Kopecky. Former Panther Olli Jokinen had been penalized tripping. Center Jonathan Huberdeau tacked on an insurance goal -- his second goal of the season -- less than three minutes later. Kopecky capped the scoring with an empty-netter for his second goal of the year. Winnipeg (3-3-1), which came into the game tied with Calgary for the fewest...

Panthers' Upshall out a month

Florida Panthers forward Scottie Upshall will be out of action at least a month because of an ankle injury he sustained during a fight in Thursday's game against Winnipeg, the South Florida Sun Sentinel reported Friday. The Panthers have had injury problems this season, and were starting to get healthy, with the return of Kris Versteeg and Marcel Goc this week. But now they...

Bad luck? Florida's poor start could be tied to variance

The Florida Panthers are off to a dismal start. Six games into the new year the Panthers find themselves staring at a 1-5-0 record, placing them 5th in the Southeast Division and last in the Eastern Conference. The offense is sputtering while the defense and goaltenders are stumbling. Panthers fans have a right to be concerned. However, are the Panthers really this bad or is their...

Panthers Were Close To Getting Healthy

from Harvey Fialkov of the Sun Sentinel, Just when it seems the Panthers were getting healthy this week with the returns of forward Kris Versteeg on Tuesday and Marcel Goc on Thursday, they lost forward Scottie Upshall for at least a month with an injured ankle sustained during a fight with former teamates James White in last night’s wild third period. Upshall was on crutches...

With losing streak over, Panthers looking up

SUNRISE, Fla. The Florida Panthers are looking up. At this point, it the only direction they can go. The Panthers snapped their five-game losing streak Thursday night, barely hoisting themselves out of the NHL's basement. It is the first step in a turnaround Florida hopes takes shape as the team starts to return key players from injury. "We're still not out of it...

Peter Tessier: Jets Lose & Prust is Pathetic

Want to talk hockey follow Pete HERE Last night the Jets almost found a way to dig themselves out of a 2 goal hole that had been a hallmark of the previous two games. For a period of a few minutes they did actually do just that for the third game in a row when Olli Jokinen took an Evander Kane pass and fired a wrist a shot Carey Price should have saved. It was 3-2 Jets but not for long....

About Last Night…What’s Not on Ondrej Pavelec’s iPod

It’s safe to say that after this trip to Tampa, Ondrej Pavelec and the Winnipeg Jets won’t be  fans of Lou Christie anytime soon. Pavelec and backup goaltender Al Montoya combined to do a re-mix of Christie’s #1 hit from 1966, “Lightning Strikes” as they allowed eight goals to Tampa Bay and got thumped 8-3. Tampa scored three power-play goals in the first period and picked...

Peter Tessier: Jets Look for Answers & Coach Noel Has None

Follow Pete on Twitter HERE Fugly does not even begin to describe the third period for the Winnipeg Jets as they visited the team in the league with the worst record. It didn’t show on the ice though but in the stands there barely an AHL crowd in attendance. Back on the ice though it was a slow decline into a rapid descent as the game wore on. After one period there...
