With the NHL’s top two leaders in career overtime goals, the Devils should be virtually unbeatable in games that aren’t decided in regulation time. While their 7-11 record this season proves that isn’t the case, they claimed two vital points Thursday night when Patrik Elias scored a four-on-three power play goal 40 seconds into overtime to lift the Devils to a 3-2 victory over the Dallas Stars at American Airlines Center. “It’s hugely important,” said goalie Cory Schneider, who stopped 14 of the 16 shots he faced to get his record back to .500 at 10-10-7. “I don’t think we would’ve been satisfied coming out of here with one point.” For Elias it was the 16th overtime goal of his career, which ranks second all-time behind only Jaromir Jagr. When it was suggested that Jagr is within reach because he’ll hit the advanced age of 42 in just over two weeks, Elias said: “Yeah, but he’s going to play until he’s 48. I’m not.” Schneider and the Devils were fighting to protect a 2-1 le

Patrik Elias scored a power-play goal 40 seconds into overtime to give the New Jersey Devils a 3-2 victory over the Dallas Stars on Thursday night. The Stars had tied the score on Tyler Seguin's goal with 52 seconds remaining in regulation play. Dainius Zubrus scored in the first period and Travis Zajac added a goal in the second to give New Jersey a 2-0 lead. Jamie Benn scored...

Patrik Elias says selfish play by some players is costing team valuable points

Patrik Elias didn’t want to talk. Not because the Devils’ alternate captain wanted to avoid dealing with the media after Tuesday night’s 3-0 loss in St. Louis. Elias preferred to keep his postgame remarks short because he did not want to criticize any of his teammates by name for being selfish. But as he walked hurriedly to the team bus, Elias voiced his displeasure at the...

NHL trade speculation heats up

Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur has watched Cory Schneider emerge as New Jersey’s No. 1 option. Brodeur is working on an expiring contract. He doesn’t want to retire from the NHL as a bench warmer. So if another team wants to talk trade, Brodeur would give some thought to waiving his no-trade protection and moving on.“It’s within the team’s rights to try and make themselves...

Jaromir Jagr has some interesting comments regarding safety at the Olympics

Jaromir Jagr had some rather interesting comments regarding safety at the Winter Olympics in Sochi. In an interview seen on Sovetsky Sport and later translated on Puck Daddy, Jagr was questioned about the safety of foreigners in Sochi and how safe he felt living in Russia for four years.  Jagr's response was ... something. Afraid-afraid… If you are destined to drown...

New Jersey Devils complete disappointing road trip

Coming off of their embarrassing 7-3 loss to the New York Rangers at Yankee Stadium, the New Jersey Devils set off on a three game Central Time zone road trip that included games in St. Louis, Dallas, and Nashville.  The Devils earned three of a possible six points, but the trip as a whole certainly was not the type of bounce back effort that they had hoped for. The road trip got...

The Answer Is Always Cory Schneider

Going into this season one of the bigger questions in goaltending was who would start for the Devils; perhaps the greatest goalie of all time or Cory Schneider (2 GA, 14 SV, W)? Sounds like an easy call, right? I figured it’d be Schneider. Why else did the Devils bring him in but to grab the torch from Martin Brodeur and run with it? And had anyone seen this guy play in Vancouver...

2013-14 Game 54: Stars lose 3-2 to Devils in OT

Final OT Dallas 2 – New Jersey 3 1st Period: 10:59 - Dainius Zubrus (10) Assists: Jaromir Jagr(29), Marek Zidlicky(21) This was easily the worst the Stars have looked for the last two weeks. They allowed the Devils to take the front foot and struggled to get into the game for nearly 15 minutes. Dallas had a absolutely useless 5-on-3 in the first five minutes...

The Fangover: Preds tie it up late, beat Devils in OT!

It was a run of the mill game for this season's Predators as they didn't get much good offense and let in a couple of soft goals at home to the Devils. Devils were on the second leg of a back to back while the Preds were returning home after a brief tour of desolate Western Canada. Weber opened the game's scoring in the first with a traditional, true to form rocket...
