Steve Sullivan, Jordan Staal and Tyler Kennedy scored and the Pittsburgh Penguins fended off elimination with a 3-2 comeback victory over the Philadelphia Flyers on Friday night in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinal series. Marc-Andre Fleury made 24 saves including a series of big stops in the third period -- to help Pittsburgh cut Philadelphia's lead to 3-2 in the best-of-seven series. Game 6 is Sunday in Philadelphia. Matt Carle and Scott Hartnell scored power-play goals in the first period for Philadelphia, but the Flyers failed to close out Pittsburgh for the second straight game. Ilya Bryzgalov stopped 20 shots. Following four wild games that featured a record 45 goals, the teams played something more closely resembling playoff hockey. Staal, coming off a hat trick in Pittsburgh's 10-3 victory in Game 4, likely extended the Penguins' season when he beat Bryzgalov over the glove 6:15 into the second period to tie the game and give the team an energ...

Fleury the difference for Pens in Game 5

The Penguins' Marc-Andre Fleury had a career-best season with 42 wins, just one shy of most in the NHL. He's the owner of a Stanley Cup ring, robbing the Detroit Red Wings in the final seconds of Game 7 in 2009 to preserve his team's place in hockey history. Outside of Pittsburgh, however, the 27-year-old who is nicknamed "Flower" doesn't often get mentioned...

Penguins-Flyers Preview

Pittsburgh's Marc-Andre Fleury reverted to 40-win form and stifled the Flyers in Game 5. The way Philadelphia forward Scott Hartnell sees it, it's about time for Ilya Bryzgalov to do the same in Game 6. ''It's time for our defense and our goalie to win us a game,'' Hartnell said Saturday. ''It's not that Bryz is playing bad. We'd love...

you can't even can this heat.

This skeleton crew sails on, on this ghost ship of DREAMS. LYRICS ARE IN THE DESCRIPTION apparently. Whatever.If you didn't know this boogie was for real without lyrics, you don't need to be listening to this song. Pittsburgh was suffering some major oxygen deficiencies this evening. At least that's the impression everyone got when they realized that they...

Penguins pull out a big win in game 4

Last night started out much the same as the past three games, penalties, soft goals and a crazy period.  The Flyers continue to be strong on the Power Play going 3 for 5.  But last night on 8 power plays the Penguins had they scored on 4 of them and gave up no shorthanded goals.  But the real difference came in the 5 on 5 play.  All of the Flyers’ goals came on Power Plays...

Penguins stay alive, blow out Flyers

Pushed to the brink of a sweep, Pittsburgh's Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Jordan Staal pushed back with a vengeance, helping the Penguins score nine goals in the first two periods in a 10-3 win over the Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday in their opening-round playoff series. Staal had a hat trick, Malkin scored his first two goals of the series and Crosby added one to help...

What if Nicklas Grossmann decided to stay down?

That’s the question I ask.  And not just once, I ask it twice. The NHL wants to get rid of headshots in the NHL.  And they also use the metric of an injury to determine justice, which if you’ve read me recently, you’d know I’m completely against that. On Wednesday night, on two different occasions, Nicklas Grossmann of the Philadelphia Flyers was the victim of a hit to...
