Friday November 25th at Portland – Pirates 4 Worcester Sharks 3

Tyler Eckford scored on a power play with 1:41 remaining in overtime and Curtis McElhinney stopped a season high 44 shots as the Portland Pirates defeated the Worcester Sharks by a count of 4-3 this evening in front of 5,218 at the Cumberland County Civic Center.

Eckford tallied two goals on the night, Andy Miele contributed a pair of goals and an assist, and Matt Watkins and Brett MacLean each notched a pair of assists as the Pirates improved to 9-7-1-1 overall and 6-4-0-0 at home.

Ben Ferriero, Curt Gogol and Tommy Wingels each registered goals as the Sharks dropped to 6-5-3-2 on the season.

The Pirates got on the board first, on a blast from the blue-line by Eckford just over five minutes into the game but the Sharks provided a quick answer on a power-play tally from Ferriero exactly one minute later at the 6:08 mark. In the second period, Portland claimed their second lead of the game when a shot from Miele deflected over and behind Worcester goaltender Harri Sateri with over five minutes remaining in the frame. Miele beat Sateri again three minutes later, this time on Portland’s first power-play opportunity of the game, on a snapshot from the right of the goaltender’s crease following a perfect carom off the boards from a Nick Ross shot from the point. Worcester would go on to cut the lead to one on Gogol’s third of the season, capitalizing on a rebound from a wrap-around attempt from Marek Viedensky at 8:34, and eventually tie it up on Wingel’s third tally of the season just under two minutes later. The game would go on to an extra overtime period, where Eckford blasted home his second of the night to give the Pirates the victory.

The Sharks out-shot the Pirates 47-25 as McElhinney improved to 5-7-0 on the season. Sateri stopped 21 shots while dropping to 3-4-0.

The Allied Home Mortgage Three Stars of the Game were: 1. Eckford; 2. Miele; 3. McElhinney.
