Veteran defenseman Martin Skoula, formerly of the Minnesota Wild, has signed a one year contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Skoula, 29, was cut from both the Florida Panthers and the Columbus Blue Jackets training camp rosters before landing a contract with Pittsburgh. I'm not really in favor of this move, because this puts Deryk Engelland and Nate Guenin, both of whom are NHL capable, back in the AHL. Not to mention Ben Lovejoy, who is currently injured. This leaves the Penguins with one forward and two defensemen to cut from training camp. Those cuts need to be made by tomorrow at noon. EDIT: As of 3:50pm, HockeyBuzz is reporting that Paul Bissonnette, Chris Conner, Deryk Engelland, and Nate Guenin were all put on waivers to be sent to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the AHL. This means Martin Skoula will be the Pens' 7th defenseman and the team will also start the season without an extra forward while Max Talbot is on the injured reserve.
