There was a lot of news coming from practice today, courtesy of Brett Cyrgalis (New York Post). Marc Staal will play tomorrow, and Anton Stralman was taking rushes with Michael Del Zotto. John Moore and Justin Falk formed the fourth defense pairing. Staal was skating with rookie Connor Allen, who appears to be getting at least one more game with the big club. Ryan McDonagh and Dan Girardi were back together as well. The full lines: Chris Kreider-Derek Stepan-Rick Nash Derick Brassard-Brad Richards-Mats Zuccarello Carl Hagelin-J.T. Miller-Benoit Pouliot Brian Boyle-Dominic Moore-Derek Dorsett McDonagh-Girardi Staal-Allen Del Zotto-Stralman Moore-Falk (likely scratches if Stralman is good to go) Per Andrew Gross, there is no decision on Stralman as of yet. He will see how he feels tomorrow. If he can’t go, one of Moore or Falk will skate with Del Zotto. Ryan Callahan was in a non-contact jersey. Tweet

The Marc Staal audition begins tonight

Can Staal get back to his dominant old self? With Marc Staal returning to the line-up tonight, speculation will (re) begin as to whether the timing of his return is right or whether Staal will ever be able to return to his previous best. In addition to the obvious chase for a playoff spot and the continued (prolonged) acclimatisation to the new coaching staff, the Rangers will need...

Addressing the Dan Girardi rumor; Michael Del Zotto rumor update

Photo: Jim McIsaac/Getty Images North America A lot of noise has been made over the past 12 hours about Glenn Healy’s comments on Hockey Night in Canada last night. For those who missed it, Healy said the following: If the Rangers trade (Del Zotto) it will be a D for a D because of the Stralman situation but look for the Boston Bruins to call the Rangers about Dan Girardi. That...

2014 WJC: Skjei, Buchnevich continue strong play

Aside from three straight USA wins, one thing that has been very nice to watch over the past few days is the impressive play of the Rangers prospects in action in the 2014 World Junior Championship. Both Brady Skjei (USA, 2012 1st) and Pavel Buchnevich (Russia, 2013 3rd) have had strong tournaments thus far, and have been key cogs as both teams look towards the elimination round...

Rangers Mid-Terms: Defense and Goaltending

With the Rangers approaching the midway point in their season it’s time for Ranger Nation to assign the team their Mid-Term grades. Joining me in this venture is Jan Levine, the New York Rangers blogger on Hockey Buzz and also Roto Wire’s NHL fantasy columnist. Jan is a good friend of mine and will contribute […]

Ranger Rumor Roundup

The never-ending Michael Del Zotto trade rumors are in full swing yet again. Maybe we should call this feature the “Michael Del Zotto Rumor Roundup,” at least until a trade is actually made. The Ottawa Sun’s Bruce Garrioch, who has been prolific with his reports on MDZ trade possibilities, says the Senators will have some […]

Defenseman Marc Staal nears return

Defenseman Marc Staal, who missed his 10th game Sunday night since suffering a concussion Dec. 7, did not rule out returning to the lineup Tuesday at Florida — though Friday at Pittsburgh may be more likely. Staal participated in the morning skate to mark the second straight day he has practiced with the Rangers. "I’ll practice again [today] and see how I feel," Staal...

Alain Vigneault’s Tough Love Has Paid Dividends For New York Rangers

Getty Images By Tom Urtz Jr. (@TomUrtzJr) NHL players always want to be in the good graces of their bench boss, but ultimately there are moments when a player will land in the head coach’s doghouse. This year Alain Vigneault has shown tough love to three players in particular, and two of the three have responded in spades. The players in question include Michael Del Zotto, Benoit...

If it is Sunday then Do Not Disturb

Anthony Duclair (Sebastien Dion)The quickest cure for lack of sleep is to watch New York Ranger and New York Islander prospects in action as someone or some team will find a way to make you smile. Now let's start off by seeing who earned our first star for the first Saturday evening of the 2nd half. If you picked Anthony Duclair (NYR 2013 3rd) of the Quebec Remparts then you...

With Lundqvist back between the pipes, Rangers top Lightning

Henrik Lundqvist made 37 saves in his first start in four games, and Mats Zuccarello had a goal and two assists in the New York Rangers' 4-3 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Sunday night. Lundqvist watched from the bench as backup Cam Talbot started the previous three games, winning two, after Lundqvist struggled through a 1-4-2 stretch. Rick Nash, Chris Kreider and...

Jan Levine: Game 40: NYR 4 TB 3, Three PPG + Strong Lundqvist Keys to Victory

The Rangers got back to the sea-level mark, evening their record with a 4-3 win over the Lightning on Sunday. New York was strong early on, then held on for dear life in the third, thanks to solid goaltending from Henrik Lundqvist in his first start in four games. The Blueshirts will once again attempt to go over .500 on New Year's Eve against the Panthers. Game Highlights...

Richards' shootout goal lifts Rangers over Panthers

Brad Richards scored the lone goal in the shootout, and the New York Rangers rallied to beat the Florida Panthers 2-1 on Tuesday night. Richards beat Tim Thomas with a wrist shot to the top left corner after Thomas stopped the first two New York attempts in the tiebreaker. Henrik Lundqvist made a save against Brad Boyes to seal the Rangers' victory. New York defenseman Dan...

Game 40: Continue doing the right things in Tampa

Scott Audette/NHLI via Getty Images The Rangers played a very good game against Washington on Friday night, but came out on the losing end after Philipp Grubauer made 38 saves. If the Rangers continue to play like they did on Friday night, they shouldn’t have a problem beating a lot of teams in the Eastern Conference. They face a tough matchup in Tampa Bay tonight, and the Rangers...

Powerplay perfection propels Rangers to victory

Finally. (Photo by Scott Audette/NHLI via Getty Images) The Rangers went 3-for-3 with the man advantage last night to bury the Tampa Bay Lightning by a score of 4-3. The Rangers –without two of their top four defensemen, dressing a rookie in his first game, and three very inconsistent bottom-pairing players– managed to erase an early 2-1 deficit with three straight goals against...

Lundqvist, back in for Talbot, leads Rangers past Lightning

It was far from perfect, or inspiring or anything more than just what it was — a win. Yet in the visitors’ dressing room at the Tampa Bay Times Forum on Sunday night, there was Henrik Lundqvist underneath the Broadway hat, an unfamiliar sight in this ugly season of mediocrity, and even if the Rangers franchise goaltender was subdued in his joy, finally he was no longer joyless...
