Happy first (pre-season) game of hockey Minnesota. With last seasons, condensed, contracted season of hockey that went later in the year, it really feels like last season just ended.  Between that and changes at my day job, I feel like summer never happened.  Before I could even blink, the high school football season here began which of course then heralded the start of the school year.  While I'm glad that hockey is back, and on time this year, I'm not sure I'm ready to begin focusing on another hockey season.  However like most things in life, I'll adjust and adapt. We also have to once again adapt to a pre-season roster.  As in most seasons, we have to watch these first exhibition games where the front office trots out prospects and try-out contract players.  Usually, pre-season is a time of low-expectations.  However, looking at tonight's roster that was posted online yesterday, the front office is going with an interesting mix of veteran players and ...

Wild F Nino Niederreiter impresses in preseason debut

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Nino Niederreiter made a strong first impression with his new team. Niederreiter, the 21-year-old Minnesota Wild forward acquired this offseason from the Islanders, scored the Wild's only goal in Tuesday's 3-1 preseason loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets. But even when he wasn't burying the puck in the back of the net, the 6-foot-2, 208-pound Niederreiter...

Wild excited to see F Jason Pominville's first full season with team

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Jason Pominville never really got comfortable in Minnesota last year. After spending his entire NHL career with the Buffalo Sabres, Pominville was dealt to the Wild in an early April trade. With only a month left in the season, Pominville and his family opted to stay in a Twin Cities hotel rather than try to rush into finding a permanent residence. The on-ice...

GARTH'S CORNER: A Healthy Pommer Changes Everything

Zach Parise sang has been singing the praises of his Minnesota Wild teammate jason Pominville since training camp opened last week. Parise told the Star Tribune that having a healthy Jason Pominville on his line along with Mikko Koivu is like having an x-factor. “He’s an all-around player, and I saw him firsthand a lot out in the East, so I knew how good a player...

Tony Dean: MNWild: Early Observations

With one preseason game in the books for the Minnesota Wild, I am becoming convinced that the season ahead for the team will be a bridge year adjusting to their new division and allowing their young players to acclimate. In speaking last night with Brad Ratgen my fellow Wild HB writer, it is just apparent that this season is shaping up to be more pain than pleasure. The reshaping...

Columbus Blue Jackets-looking forward.

Is Marion Gaborik poised for a big year? Hockey Season is back! Well not fully back, but preseason hockey is now underway. For the Blue Jackets, it started with a 5-4 overtime win against the Pittsburgh Penguins, with Ryan Murray tallying the winning goal.  Now this is only one preseason game, but it looks as if the Jackets can keep up the winning ways that were around last year...

Matt Cooke trying to change the minds of the fans in the State Hockey

Matt Cooke of the Pittsburgh Penguins. (Photo credit: Wikipedia) I am sure we're going to see a bunch of these types of articles leading up to the season. Needless to say, I am not all that thrilled about him being a member of the Minnesota Wild. Jess Myers, 1500ESPN.com -- "He was pretty dirty," Parise said. "He got under your skin, and he's got that...

Murray scores late in OT for Jackets

Rookie defenseman Ryan Murray scored 4:38 into overtime to lift the Columbus Blue Jackets past the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-4 on Sunday night in the preseason opener for both teams. Murray took a feed from R.J. Umberger and beat backup goalie Jeff Zatkott. Murray was the No. 2 pick in the 2012 NHL draft but missed the season with a shoulder injury. Chuck Kobasew got Pittsburgh even...

Cam Atkinson and Ryan Johansen each had a goal and an assist, and a Columbus Blue Jackets split squad beat the Minnesota Wild 3-1 in a preseason game Tuesday night. Mark Letestu also scored for the Blue Jackets, who got 20 saves from Jeremy Smith. Nino Niederreiter scored for Minnesota, which played its preseason opener. Johansen gave Columbus a 1-0 lead with 1:51 left in the...

Matt Cooke Has Changed

from Michael Russo of the Star Tribune, “Rugby players beat the heck out of each other for 60 minutes. Punch each other in the face, kick each other with spike shoes, rip each other’s ears off,” Cooke said. “The only rule, when the whistle blows, the game’s over, and you go have a beer together. “It’s about the game. I was always taught, ‘Don’t let him...

Entertainment Roundup: Wild starts

I attended this evening’s first MN Wild preseason game against the Columbus Blue Jackets. Even though the top players were not playing, I was hoping to see some drive and aggression that we would see carried into the rest of the season. Maybe this season will turn out to be an upward slow. The game did not have many Wild team highlights. The first period was dominated by the Blue...

GARTH'S CORNER: Sabres Top 9 Forwards Impressive In Win @ CBUS

Sabres defeat the Blue Jackets 3-1 to move to 2-0 in preseason standings. The record means zilch. However, the kids are getting a ton of experience and are earning their way onto the score sheet. Marcus Foligno earns first star of the game with his two goals, including the GWG. There it is. Sabres win a road game, 3-1. Marcus x 2, Grigo with a single. Hackett clean for 29 minutes, M...
