Nashville Predators general manager David Poile, who also is general manager of the U.S. Olympic men's hockey team, underwent a procedure on his injured eye last Friday in Nashville and is expected to return to office work this week, the team announced. The procedure, performed at Vanderbilt Medical Center, was "designed to allow for further evaluation of his injury," according to a news release issued by the team. The statement also said Poile is wearing an eye patch and will continue to do so as doctors monitor his medical progress. Poile suffered a fractured orbital bone and fractures in his nose on Feb. 7 at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul when he was hit by an errant puck during a morning skate. Because of his injuries, Poile will not be able to travel to Sochi for the Olympics, where the United States went unbeaten in the preliminary round and won its group. The United States will play the winner of Czech and Slovakia in the quarterfinals on Wednesday. Poile is in "regular contact" with Pittsburgh Penguins general manager Ray Shero, the assistant general manager for the U.S. Olympic men's hockey team who is handling on-site operations in Sochi. Before becoming the Penguins' general manager, Shero was Nashville's assistant general manager under Poile. "I know that I have a challenging road ahead, but am going to embrace the challenge and am eager to get back to work," Poile said in the statement. "Thank you, in particular to the medical teams at Regions Hospital in St. Paul, Minn., and Vanderbilt Medical Center here in Nashville for the outstanding care and attention I have received and continue to receive. Thanks also to all those in Nashville and throughout the hockey community who have reached out to offer support and encouragement. It has been uplifting and most appreciated. I'm looking forward to watching USA's quest for the gold medal in Sochi and the Predators resuming the playoff race."
