(Photo by: Western Michigan University) Along with several other National Hockey League teams, the Nashville Predators are attempting to sign highly touted college free agent Danny DeKeyser.  According to Josh Cooper of The Tennessean, the Predators met and chat with DeKeyser and his advisers from Newport Sports in Missisauga, Ontario. It is believed that general manager and assistant general manager David Poile and Paul Fenton, respectively, was apart of the group that went to chat with him. Danny DeKeyser played for Western Michigan in the past two seasons as a defenseman. Last season, he totaled fifteen points (2 goals, 13 assists) in 35 games. However, DeKeyser isn't known for his scoring, but his puck moving ability and solid defense. It is noted that he is NHL ready. DeKeyser is 6'3" and just shy of 200 pounds. However, it doesn't sound too glamorous as there are several others teams in the league pushing hard for his services whenever he is ready to go. The front runners are the Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs because of how close they are to home for him. Other teams including the St. Louis Blues, Anaheim Ducks, Pittsburgh Penguins, Philadelphia Flyers and Ottawa Senators are looking at him as well, in no particular order. John Buccigross of ESPN reported on Twitter, "I hear Detroit, Edmonton, Anaheim, St. Louis, Nashville are final 5 for Western Michigan's Dan DeKeyser." What the Predators have over all of these teams is their ability to grow and develop young defensemen into the professional game and allow them to become a top-4 defenseman someday, whether it is in Nashville or another NHL city. For example, Shea Weber, Cody Franson, Ryan Suter, Dan Hamhuis and Kimmo Timonen. Weber is the only current Predator still on the roster as the rest of them are scattered around North America. It will be interesting to see what happens before the trade deadline as to where he signs. Wherever he goes, he will be treated like a top defenseman in that city.
