Although neither player took part in yesterday’s practice or the morning skate a little while ago at the Pepsi Center, the Avs said centers Ryan O’Reilly and Paul Stastny will be in the lineup tonight against the Cal-Gary Flames. O’Reilly has what sounds like a touch of the flu or something close, while Stastny just took a “maintenance day” yesterday. Question for tonight is, who is the center on the “second” line tonight? I asked Joe Sacco this morning if TJ Galiardi would again center a line between those of Stastny and O’Reilly, and his response was “I’m not sure yet.” So, we don’t know what that line is going to look like yet. David Jones is hoping to get ‘er goin’ again. He played only a bit less than 10 minutes in Friday’s wild game in Dallas, and is scuffling a bit right now. Here is Jones on his recent slump, and on why the team takes a 1-4 home mark into tonight’s tilt: HereR...

Matt Duchene Dangles Through D

Colorado Avalanche center Matt Duchene completely danced through the Dallas Stars defense on Friday night, completing a hat trick with this beautiful goal. You have to wonder what the three pylons in Dallas uniforms were doing when they just let Duchene skate right between them and towards the net. Duchene had to avoid no checks, [...]

Shaune Vetter: The Calgary Tower Stood Tall

After the first period in which the Flames were outshot 18-8 and Henrik Karlsson stopped 17 of those 18 shots, one would have hoped that the Flames would be able to bounce-back and attempt to repay their goaltender, who single-handedly was keeping his team in the game as they struggled to find their groove. A 19-9 advantage in the shots by the Sabres in the second period would certainly...

Avs can be optimistic after loss

The Colorado Avalanche lost 6-7 in OT against the Dallas Stars in what Steve Martin would’ve referred to as a wild and crazy game. I still believe that the Avs have reason to feel cautiously optimistic after their loss, even though the team saw several defensive breakdowns and didn’t get the usual quality of goaltending from Semyon Varlamov. The reason for the optimism...

Kiprusoff stops 32, Flames top Avs 2-1 (AP)

The Calgary Flames reached the .500 mark Sunday, but if they played the Colorado Avalanche more often they might have the best record in the NHL. Miikka Kiprusoff stopped 32 shots, Mark Giordano and Curtis Glencross each had a goal and the Calgary Flames beat the Colorado Avalanche 2-1 on Sunday night.

Game Report: Flames lose 2-1 in Buffalo

In a game that featured the battle of backup goaltenders, Jonas Enroth came out on top, but one could definitely argue that Henrik Karlsson played better. Enroth stopped 29 of 30 shots on the way to a 2-1 win. Karlsson, who played his best game with Calgary yet, stopped 42 of 44 shots, and kept [...]

Matty's Hatty Not Enough in Dallas, 6-7OT

So obvious stuff first: what a game for Duchene. Ok, the 2nd goal was practically handed to him, and the other two of the goals were perhaps a little soft, but he was flying all night long and made a lot of Stars players look silly trying to get the puck aways from him. With the emergance of O'Reilly as a true offense threat, I'm much more comfortable with Duchene playing...

What to watch today: Red Wings host Avalanche at JLA

After ending their six-game losing streak over the weekend, now the burning question is: Can the Red Wings extend their winning streak to two? They host the dreaded Colorado Avalanche in what looks like an even match, at least according to the records -- they're both a game above the .500 mark. 7:30 p.m., Fox Sports Detroit.

Bad Start

from John Kreiser of NHL.com, Five players who are struggling: Brendan Morrison – The 36-year-old center missed Calgary’s first five games with a knee injury, and his offensive game has yet to make an appearance. Morrison has not had a point in the eight games he’s played and has managed only eight shots on goal. Dustin Penner – Los Angeles traded for Penner...
