Official team photo of Brent Burns is fantastic

The homeless-looking man you see in that picture is Sharks defenseman Brent Burns. Some players might come into camp out of shape or overweight after having no hockey action for over six months. That’s going to be the case for a bunch of guys this season. But it might be safe to say no other player will be reuniting with his team with a hibernating bear on his face like Burns...

Could Marc Staal be the difference maker?

A return to All Star form by Marc Staal would be huge for the Rangers While everyone in the media who’ve analysed the Rangers point to Henrik Lundqvist in net and Marian Gaborik, Rick Nash and Brad Richards up front as the critical components for a successful season, people have somewhat forgotten about the defense. Even when people have talked Rangers defense it’s invariably...

Quick Update: Fasth and Lindberg continuing strong seasons

Oscar Lindberg, fast becoming a top prospect for the Rangers Perhaps lost among the anticipation of the NHL’s Saturday return to action are Ranger prospects Oscar Lindberg and Jesper Fasth continuing their excellent seasons in the Swedish Elite League. Some people are concerned about the Rangers depth heading into the new season but beyond this year it appears the Rangers will...

New York Rangers’ Chad Kolarik Still Waiting for the Call

By Kristin Tullo (@K_Tullo) Getty Images The Collective Bargaining Agreement has been ratified, the lockout is over. Players that were shipped to the AHL to play until the lockout ended are heading back to their respective NHL clubs. Or at least preparing to do so. But Saturday night, Chad Kolarik, worked on his puck handling in front of the visitor bench at Giant Center in Hershey...

Brooks: Rangers attempting to buyout Redden now

Per Larry Brooks, the Rangers are attempting to use their first compliance buyout on Wade Redden prior to the start of the season. The Rangers would still retain the $5.6 million cap hit for this season –which would make the NHL happen– while releasing Redden from his obligation to the Rangers, which pleases the union. Redden, if released from his obligation to the Rangers...

Filling in for Arron Asham in game number one

AP Photo/Matt Slocum For those that remember last year’s “epic fail” series between the Flyers and the Penguins last year, recall the aftermath of the Game Three bloodbath. Arron Asham was suspended for four games following his intent to injure Brayden Schenn. The Penguins played three more games that series, before bowing out to the Flyers in six. That leaves one game remaining...

Sharks defenseman Brent Burns may actually be the Missing Link

The NHL lockout seems to have affected some players more deeply than others, both emotionally and financially, as it appears Sharks defenseman Brent Burns ran out of money to buy the necessities like razors, shaving cream, and a comb before the Sharks official team photoshoot. Either that or Burns is trying to make 2013 the year of the Cro-Magnon surfer dude, which I can totally...

Sharks are back, so they treated us to a new funny commercial (Video)

Usually when Sharks season rolls around, you can count on seeing some funny TV commercials for the team flood the local airwaves. There was one where Joe Thornton was a ventriloquist. There was another where the Sharks pretended to be shopping network salesmen. Another notable one had Logan Couture as a pizza delivery boy, which wasn’t as creepy or filled with sexual innuendo...

Dolan Explains Lack of Fan Outreach By Rangers

Steve Zipay at Newsday posts this e-mail exchange between a Rangers fan, Joseph Hellman, and owner James Dolan on the lack of fan outreach by the Rangers since the lockout ended... Mr. Hellman: “With all due respect,” Hellman wrote, “I think the way the New York Rangers organization has responded to the NHL lockout is terrible. In other cities, there have been open...

Torts Going to "Play the Hell Out of" Girardi & McDonagh

Pat Leonard at the Daily News reports that John Tortorella plans on using Dan Girardi and Ryan McDonagh as his workhorses once again this season... "We're gonna play the hell out of 'em." ...they've had a year and a half off so they should be rested. Having said that, a fully healthy Staal and hopefully more confidence in Bickel will help take some...

Jan Levine: Redden, Richards, Power Play

Will make this blog a short one and hope to get a season preview up before tomorrow's game, real life/work permitting. Redden: In a move that surprised no one, Wade Redden passed through waivers and was bought out. The end result of that move is that the Rangers have an additional $5.6 million in dead cap space to go along with the $1.6 million from Chris Drury's buyout...

Biron to Likely Get 12 Starts This Season

Pat Leonard at the Daily News reports that John Tortorella will use the same philosophy as last year with his goaltending rotation. Henrik Lundqvist started 75% of the regular-season games (62), with Biron starting the other 20. Leonard adds that in this year’s 48-game schedule, that would translate to 36 starts for Lundqvist and 12 for Biron. ...i'm sure Lundqvist...

Red Wings mid-day news: pondering adding Redden, Helm/Samuelsson status updates, Mrazek the All-Star

Paul already posted this in KK hockey, but it's worth repeating for TMR readers: the New York Rangers have placed Wade Redden on waivers with the intention of buying his contract out, and as the Detroit Red Wings must avail themselves of all their options to attempt to bolster their defense, the Free Press's Helene St. James reports that the Wings are at least considering...

And So It Begins

Here we are folks. About two and a half months after the season was suppossed to begin, the New York Rangers will open up their regular season tomorrow night in Boston with a tilt against the Boston Bruins. For the Blueshirts, this game has been a long time coming. It marks the debut of Rick Nash and what will hopefully be a more dynamic offense both in even strength situations...
