This was precisely John Tortorella's point after the New York Rangers had survived and won a triple-overtime marathon in Game 3 against the Washington Capitals in their second-round playoff series.

As exhilarating as that victory was, it counted as just one win, and it wouldn't mean much, Tortorella said, without a strong follow-up performance Saturday.

But the Rangers allowed Washington to even up the series at 2-2 with a 3-2 loss in Game 4, with Caps defenseman Mike Green capitalizing on Carl Hagelin's late penalty with the game-winning power-play goal with 5:48 remaining in the third period.

“It’s an opportunity lost,” veteran forward Mike Rupp said. "You’ve got to let it marinate and let it burn and use it to our advantage on Monday (in Game 5 in New York).

"We don’t feel frustrated. We had our chances and we didn’t score. We made a few mistakes and they wound up in our net. It was not a horrible game, but it was not what we needed to do to win the series. We had an opportunity to do something today and we didn’t put ourselves in the best position to do that."

The Rangers similarly split the first four games against Ottawa in the first round, with each team winning once at home and on the road, before winning the series in seven.

“Right now, it’s tough to be positive, but it’s 2-2,” goalie Henrik Lundqvist said. “I’m probably going to think about this game for a couple of hours, then move on and look forward to playing at home.”
